The South Winneshiek girls’ basketball team began its 2019-2020 campaign with three straight road matchups against Central, MFL/MarMac, and Postville. The young Warrior team struggled to find consistency in the three Upper Iowa Conference matchups as it fell to 0-3.

Central

The Warriors opened the season Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Elkader as South Winn fell by a score of 59-22.

Central jumped out to a 19-2 lead in the first quarter before extending the lead to 39-9 at the half. South Winn kept it close in the second half, but was still outscored 20-13.

Senior Liz Tieskoetter led the team with 16 points and five rebounds. She also knocked in three treys.

Coach Blake Moen and the Warrior boys’ basketball team got the season started with a bang, notching a pair of wins over two quality Upper Iowa Conference opponents in MFL/MarMac and Postville.

MFL/MarMac

The Warriors started a bit slow, but finished strong in their season opener Tuesday, Dec. 3, at MFL/MarMac.

“This was a complete team victory for us against a very talented team,” said Coach Moen after the 54-39 win. “We were slow and weren’t hitting shots in the first half, but in the second half our defensive intensity really took over and we were able to hold of some of their top scorers and turn defensive stops into points on the other end.”

The South Winneshiek wrestling team was on the mats for the first time this season on Saturday when the Warriors participated in the Chris Davis Invitational at Wapsie Valley.

“With 16 teams present, there were a lot of good wrestlers and I’m pretty excited that we were able to place nine of our 10 wrestlers in the top six of the tournament,” said coach Jacob Elsbernd after the event. “We had a lot of guys step up and wrestle through some tough matches to get big wins throughout the day. We are a really young team and we didn’t have our only senior (Logan Schnuelle) wrestling today, which is promising for the future.”

The Warriors took third place in the team standings, scoring 137 points and finishing above of traditional powers North Linn (fourth, 126.5 points) and Class 1A No. 10-ranked Eagle Grove (sixth, 100 points).

Leading the way for South Winn was sophomore 170-pounder Logan Hageman who took first place and recorded a pair of falls on the day. Hageman won a 12-9 decision over Waterloo Columbus’ Carson Hartz in the finals.

“Logan had a really good day,” said Elsbernd. “You could see his confidence continue to grow throughout the tournament).

Also having a good day was sophomore Phillip French who placed second at 120 pounds. French picked up a fall in the semifinals before falling to No. 4-ranked (113 pounds) Clayton McDonough of Central Springs.

Sam Conway (152 pounds) went 3-1 on the day to take third place, while No. 8-ranked (195 pounds) Damon Meyer jumped up to 220 pounds to go 3-1 and take third place. Meyer’s loss came in the semifinals as No. 10-ranked Teddy Behrends of Central Springs grinded out a 5-3 decision.

“This was a great tournament to begin the year with and after watching a lot of matches, we have a good idea of what we need to do to get better,” closed Coach Elsbernd. “We will be back in action on Thursday at Oelwein!”

On Saturday, the Warriors will host the South Winneshiek Invitational in Calmar. Teams that will be in attendance include Decorah, (Class 1A No. 5) Denver, GMLOS (Minnesota), New Hampton, North Fayette Valley, (Class 2A No. 3) Osage, Waukon, and (Class 2A No. 1) West Delaware.

NFV school board swears in new members

NFV school board swears in new members

The North Fayette Valley School Board met for its regular meeting on Monday, December 9.

During the meting, the board met for its regular session to approve the third reading of the district’s therapy dog policies in preparation for the dog that will be brought into the West Union Elementary upon satisfactory training.

“We had a policy for dogs that visit our school, but nothing for therapy dogs that will be a part of our day to day schedule,” explained NFV Superintendant Duane Willhite.  “We have taken those policies and adopted them to fit this scenario.”

Willhite went on to add that small changes were made, requiring the therapy dog to have sufficient training, as well as requiring the dog’s owner to follow a general care and upkeep schedule with the animal.

“We added something to require that not only the dog’s vaccinations are continuously up to date, but to add that the animal is properly groomed and bathed regularly.”

The board approved the third reading of the policies, and discussed a tentative schedule with the dog’s owner, NFV Special Education instructor, Jessica Bushman.

“If he stays on the trajectory he’s on, he should be ready for classroom integration by May,” said Bushman.  “That will give him time to visit the classroom before the end of the school year.”

After the approval of the reading, the session closed, and the board said goodbye to longtime board member Dawn Daughton as she did not seek reelection for another term.
