The South Winneshiek cross country program ended its season on a strong note thanks to a fifth-place finish by Billie Wagner in the girls’ race and an eighth-place finish by the Warrior boys’ team at Saturday’s State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge.

“We were very pleased with the way our kids wrapped up the season/ Our goal is always to put ourselves in position to challenge for the best individual or team spot we are capable of getting on that day,” said co-coach Kevin Kearney. “That is exactly what we did this weekend. Everyone gave themselves an opportunity to compete with the groups they were capable of racing. We had many lifetime-best efforts as a result.”

The girls’ 1A race featured only one Warrior runner: freshman Billie Wagner. That Warrior freshman went on to post one of the best South Winn times at the State Meet in school history as her 19:02.6 (season best) earned her a fifth-place finish and All-State honors.

The Ossian City Council met Monday evening for its regular session, which was highlighted by talks of the upcoming Canadian Pacific Holiday Train stop that will be taking place in town.

Mayor Bill Green informed the council that he had spoken with a representative from the railroad earlier in the day.

The train will be arriving in town at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, and will include 15 cars. While no official action was taken, the council discussed matters that will need to be addressed before the event.

Among that items discussed, the council talked about decorating the City Park, which is the ideal stopping point for the stage car on the train. The council also noted that the Ossian Fire Department will be blocking the streets around the gathering area for the train.

New daycare to help cover school district moves forward

New daycare to help cover school district moves forward

A new daycare center located next to the Valley Elementary School moved one step closer to being a reality, Monday, Nov. 4, when the Fayette County Board of Supervisors agreed to write a letter of support for the center as part of  the grant application process.

Principal for the Valley Elementary School Micah Gearhart , along with Diana Johnson and Rachelle Howe with the Upper Explorerland Planning Committee, met with supervisors and informed them about the project.

Gearhart told the Board that a recent survey showed that 40 children ages six weeks to 3-years-old in the North Fayette Valley District are in need of daycare because all the current providers are at maximum numbers and also because some of them will be retiring soon.

“All of the area daycares now are full and we have some families having to go outside Fayette County to find a place,” Gearhart told the Board.

New management, same community focus

Rebecca O’Dell took over management of Guppy’s On the Go in Elgin last week.  While much of the beloved local gas station will remain the same in the coming months, O’Dell is excited to bring her own ideas and specials to the area business.  (Megan Molseed photo)

“It started with a joke,” laughed Clermont native, Rebecca O’Dell of how she ended up taking over Guppy’s On the Go in Elgin.

“The owner was looking at getting out of it, and one day he joked that I should take over,” O’Dell continued with a grin.  “I mentioned it kind of off-hand to my mom, and she said I should do it! Everything sort of took off from there.”

While O’Dell is the first to admit she had never really imagined herself running the business on her own, it is clear that this is the perfect spot for her.

With Guppy’s On the Go regulars popping in and out throughout the day, her reporre with the customers is welcoming and friendly, as the good-natured ribbing and resulting laughter fills the local convenience store over coffee and donuts.

“We’re all like a big family here,” smiled O’Dell as she leans over the counter, gesturing towards the early morning coffee drinkers sitting next to the local gas station’s large window.  “Sometimes nothing is off limits!”

Completes tradition handed down from great-grandfather

Mark Benson was amazed by the beauty he saw on his 30-mile trek. He is shown here crossing a bridge with his dog, Sarge, on their way to Oelwein.

Completes tradition handed down from great-grandfather

Whether Fremont Ogle did it to prove to himself he wasn’t over the hill, or he just enjoyed walking, or someone dared him, or he just wanted to get to Oelwein really, really bad, we will never know. But his 30-mile walk inspired the next two generations to follow his footsteps.

Mark Benson turned 70 this year. While some of us approaching that mark might be dreading it because it means we’re moving into the “senior citizen” category, Mark may have been dreading it, or anticipating it, whatever the case may have been, for a much different reason. He knew this was the year he was going to have to repeat the odyssey left to him from his great-grandfather and his aunt before him.

Jamie Vargason may not be Michelangelo but she has taken on a project that to a lot of people, would be on that scale.

Anyone entering the Legion Post in Fayette will be struck by the image that takes center stage the moment you walk in the door. Jamie is painting a 26-foot mural on the south wall of the Legion building that includes a giant eagle and includes a representative from the branches of the United States military forces.

“This is my biggest work so far,” said the Westgate native who specializes in painting murals. An Upper Iowa University graduate with a degree in Art Education, Jamie does custom artwork when she’s not being a single mom for her three children, being a para-educator at Sumner-Fredericksburg Schools and milking cows.

Besides enjoying the chance to express her creativity, she also has another reason to feel inspired while she works.
