West Central had the new lighting system ready to go for Homecoming Friday night but couldn’t get its offense untracked as it fell to Midland, 48-6.

“Midland had some very quick linebackers and we had difficulty maintaining blocks,” explained head coach Steve Milder. “We struggled more on offense than we have all year.”

The Eagles came out hot, scoring two touchdowns in the opening quarter and three more in the second to take a commanding, 36-0 lead into the break.

The 2019 NFV Homecoming Game was anther case of “woulda, coulda, shoulda, didn’t” as the TigerHawks lost a thriller to Monticello, 30-14.

NFV had to try and come from behind all night, but four turnovers, three in the red zone, were just too much to overcome.

Early in the first quarter, a nicely placed punt by Tanner Johnson had Monti pinned on its own 14. It’s 6’5” QB hit a receiver on a short pass over the middle who then cut left, broke a tackle, and then went down the sideline for an 86-yard touchdown just 4:50 into the game. The PAT kick was no good, but the visitors had NFV in a 6-0 hole.

It got even worse for the TigerHawks when the Panthers went 60 yards in four plays to make it 12-0 with 4:13 left in the opening quarter.

Paver replacement shuts down Vine St. in WU

A portion of Vine St. in downtown West Union will be closed off for the next two weeks for paver replacement.  The pavers, which were part of West Union’s Streetscape project began breaking shortly after installation.  After multiple requests for replacements to the company, the city of West Union was finally granted the replacements under the original warranty.  The road will be closed to traffic during the construction, but the sidewalks will remain open.

“It was a case of ‘do you want the good news, or the bad news’” laughed West Union city administrator, Nick McIntyre of the replacement of pavers along Vine Street which began Monday morning.  “It was long overdue, and it’s a great step in the right direction that we are getting this done; but it will, unfortunately affect the downtown for about two weeks.”

The replacement of the pavers along Vine Street has been a long time coming, as the blocks began falling apart within a few short years of installation.
