There was only a handful of people who attended a special presentation by Fayette County explaining why the board of supervisors and the county engineer believe a $5 million bond is needed for future road repairs, but one of those people objected strongly to the plan.

The informational meeting was held at the Opera House in Fayette Thursday night, Sept. 5. The Supervisors and Engineer Joel Fantz gave a presentation that included a handout sheet with photos of road conditions and several graphs and tables outlining where tax dollars are going to today and how they have been spent in the past.

Some of the information showed projected tax rates if the $5 million bond would be approved.

“Why do you want to borrow money and have to pay interest,” asked Tim O’Brien or rural Fayette, suggesting that taxes be increased to pay for the road repairs instead of borrowing the money.

“We can’t raise taxes that much that fast,” replied Fantz

The South Winneshiek volleyball team got its 2019 campaign started last week, but it didn’t go quite as hoped.

“We lost nearly an entire roster from last year and have been working to find the right fit for everyone on the court in a way that best fits our needs as a team,” said coach Glenna Munuswamy after losing to both Dunkerton and Hudson on Thursday. “While the scores don’t show a successful night, there were many great things that we saw and also things we could identify as areas that need work.”

The South Winn football team kicked off its 2019 season on Friday night as the Warriors took on the MFL/MarMac Bulldogs on the road. The game started well for South Winn, but the Bulldogs answered in a big way as the Warriors fell, 44-28.

“We came out with a balanced offensive attack that played well enough to win the game,” said coach Jason Ohrt after the tough loss. “Defensively, we struggled to consistently recognize MFL/s blocking schemes and there were too many missed tackles.”

The Warriors received the game opening kickoff and ensued to drive the length of the field and capitalized with a 1-yard rushing touchdown to take a 6-0 lead.
