Ruth Elaine Zurbriggen Knight Kenney, 97, of West Union, Iowa formerly of Postville, Iowa passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Elaine was born February 8, 1922, at Korn Hill Farm in rural Fayette, Iowa, to Mattias and Marguerite (Wirz) Zurbriggen. Elaine grew up in rural Fayette County and Elgin, Iowa. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1939. After graduation, Elaine worked in her father’s bakeries both in Elgin, Iowa, and Sumner, Iowa. After World War II started, she worked for the Gudeman Company in Chicago, Illinois, as a riveter. The Gudeman Co. made air and oil compressors for military airplanes.

Gerald David Gehring, 91, of Des Moines, IA, passed away July 15, 2019.

Memorial Services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, October 5, 2019, at the Hawkeye United Methodist Church in Hawkeye.

Gerald, Jerry, was born on a farm in Elgin, IA on July 11, 1928 to Lawrence and Edna Gehring. Jerry was the second oldest of seven children. He was an excellent athlete, including being an All-State Honorable Mention in basketball his senior year of high school (1946). He earned the nickname “The Swan” for his graceful hook shot. After High School, he enlisted in the Army, which included being on a military championship basket team. After the army, he attended Upper Iowa University where he played football. Jerry married Marilyn McIntyre of Hawkeye, IA, November 14, 1949. Most of Jerry’s professional life was in sales. He was a true people person enhanced by his sense of humor.

Danny “Dan” J. Davis, 63, of West Union passed away at home on Thursday, September 19, 2019.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, September 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union with Pastor Adam Starrett officiating. 

A public visitation will be held from 3 PM until 6 PM on Tuesday, September 24 at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union. S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in Fayette is in charge of the arrangements.

Dan was born on August 15, 1956 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids to Larry and Sally (Berg) Davis. He graduated from Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids in 1975. He graduated from Kirkwood Community College and Hawkeye Tech with AA degrees. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Upper Iowa University.

“We had some pretty good times, particularly since our last race was 14 days ago,” was the way NFV head cross country coach, Neal Bentley summarized the results from the Starmont Invitational held Tuesday, Sept. 17, in Arlington.

The Invitational featured over 26 schools broken down into an overall category and Class 1A and Class 2A/3A results. There were 136 girls and 157 boys running in the varsity races.

The boy’s finished second in both Class 2A/3A and overall; Center Point-Urbana, in Class 3A, won with 25 points while the TigerHawks had 99.

The NFV volleyball team kept undefeated in the UIC with a 3-1 victory Thursday over Postville on the Pirates home court.

 

Saturday at the Lisbon Tournament, the TigerHawks went 1-3 against some top-flight competition.

Postville proved tough at home as the TigerHawks had to hustle to win, 25-14, 22-25, 25-17, and 25-23.

Denver upends TigerHawks, 29-7

 

“They did to us what we normally do to others,” was NFV head football coach Justin Heins reaction at Saturday morning’s Coach’s Roundtable after his TigerHawks dropped a 29-7 game to Denver Friday night in West Union.

  The TigerHawks averaged 5.4 yards a carry to 5.2 for the Cyclones. However, Denver   had 53 running plays to only 32 by NFV.

  The opening drive by the TigerHawks symbolized the game as they marched to the Denver 9, but turned the ball over on downs.
