The South Winneshiek baseball team continued its strong season as it closed out the 2019 regular season and officially began postseason play.

North Fayette Valley

The Warriors opened the week Monday, July 8, with a non-conference win over North Fayette Valley by a score of 7-1.

“After almost a week off, I felt we were a bit sluggish offensively in the game,” assessed coach Alex Smith after the win. “Our pitching and defense continue to be a strength and we were able to capitalize late in the game offensively to secure the win.”

The Warriors were led by sophomore Jacob Herold who plated two runs in a pinch hitting spot. Sophomore Cael Kuboushek also had a stellar day that included three doubles and a pair of stolen bases. Noah Tieskoetter also added to his total number of stolen bases as he had four and currently sits at 51 on the season, the second most among all classes.

Mission has been accomplished for Catholic HEART Workcamp. The nationally known service camp, which aims to promote service, connection, and love, recently completed its job in Calmar – marking the first time that the camp has visited the state of Iowa.

“CFSR (which includes St. Aloysius in Calmar, St. Francis DeSales in Ossian, Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina, and St. Wenceslaus in Spillville) has been partnering with Catholic HEART Workcamp (CHWC) for 17 years as our summer service experience and we are happy to have been able to bring the experience home,” said Patty Frana, CFSR director and co-manager of the Calmar CHWC experience along with Kris Smith.

Frana explained that over the past 17 years, hundreds of South Winneshiek students have participated in CHWC and have traveled to such locations as Trinidad, New Orleans, Chicago, and Minneapolis.

“We’re very proud to have been able to bring CHWC here,” continued Frana. “In the past, it has always been a fun going getaway for the students, but I think it’s important that we realize the need right here in our own community.”
