Each and every summer, Silver Springs Golf Course and Country Club in Ossian provides a getaway for countless area golf enthusiasts of all ages. The beautiful 9-hole golf course, however, has not always been a part of the community.

“It was the early ‘90s. The community didn’t have a golf course and a lot of people were traveling to other locations to golf,” said Dr. Arlan Paulson, an original club boardmember. “We started a group, which was headed by John Schmitt, and decided to move forward with building our own course.”

This June, the local course is set to celebrate its 25th year anniversary as it has developed immensely over the years.

“The course used to be farm land, which was purchased from Sylvester Moellers in 1992,” explained Paulson. “The course was designed by Lowell Erdman, who has also designed several other courses throughout the area.”

Future Hawkeye wind-farm project discussed by Supervisors

Future Hawkeye wind-farm project discussed by Supervisors

Wind turbines were once again the topic of discussion at the Fayette County Supervisors meeting on Monday, June 10.

Kevin Lehs, Hawkeye wind farm project manager, brought concerns he has for a new wind-energy project being proposed in Hawkeye by NextEra Energy Resources in Juno, Fla. He also presented these concerns to the Fayette County Planning and Zoning Commission. While the specific details of the proposal haven’t been made publically available at this time, the company has sent contracts to potential landowners for easements on their property.

“Fayette County has verbiage that isn’t very specific, which will be exploited by companies like NextEra Energy,” Lehs said. “I think there are about a half-dozen areas that need to be shored up in the ordinance. Let’s get these shored up and change the ordinance so there is no grey area.”

What concerns Lehs is the fact that these easement contracts are for a landowner’s entire farm, which means the company can put wind turbines wherever they want on the person’s property, as long as they are still in compliance with the current ordinance.
