It’s a tireless job that often goes thankless – but it’s a job that Clermont’s Chelsey Durnan wouldn’t trade for anything.

“I first started out going to school for athletic training,” said Durnan, a 2008 graduate of Valley. “As I went on, I decided that it wasn’t what I wanted, so I made the change to nursing and never looked back.”

Durnan went on to receive her degree from Northeast Iowa Community College, one of the most reputable schools for nursing in the Midwest, and began her professional nursing career at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

A family affair; Schneider and Hart team up as a teaching duo

Zetta Hart has been teaching at the Valley Elementary School for over 30-years.  While she has enjoyed all of her time at the school, she has found one of her favorite teaching partners in her daughter, Alayna who followed in her footsteps to become a teacher at the same school.  The mother-daughter duo currently both teach kindergarten at the northeast Iowa school.

For Valley Elementary kindergarten teachers Alayna Schneider and Zetta Hart, everyday is a family affair.  The two teachers share almost everything as they work to intertwine their lesson plans as best they can.  The two energetic women even share a closet that connects their brightly decorated classrooms.

While it is clear the two primary school teachers have a lot in common, the biggest connection of all lies on an even deeper level as 12-year teaching veteran Alayna, has learned from the best: her mother, and 30-year teaching veteran, Zetta Hart.

“I feel blessed that I get to go to work everyday and work along side my mom!” Schneider exclaimed of her teaching partner.  “I remember coming to school with her when I was younger and just loving to sit in her classroom.  Even then, I thought if I could be half the teacher she was, I’d be doing something right!”
