The Warrior boys’ golf postseason officially began Friday, May 10, at the 1A Sectional meet at Silver Springs Golf and Country Club in Ossian.

South Winn shot its lowest 18-hole score of the year on its way to a first place finish (359) on the day.

“All of our six players finished in the top 11 as individuals,” said coach Mike Wenthold after the meet. “This shows our ability to compete all the way up and down the lineup. It was awesome to see us win a lot of individual honors in a meet with seven teams. Also, winning a Sectional title was a goal we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year, so coming through on that one is nice.”

The South Winneshiek boys’ and girls’ track and field teams traveled south to Des Moines last week to compete in the 2019 State Track and Field Meet on the Blue Oval of Drake Stadium.

The Warrior boys were led by junior Noah Tieskoetter who placed 10th in the long jump with a distance of 20’04”. Senior Paul Hageman also placed high in the 3200, taking 12th. In an odd event, there were no official times for the race because of an incorrectly fired gun that came a lap earlier than the actual final lap.

Other Warriors to compete included the 14th place 4x100 team of Zach Taylor, Cael Kuboushek, Noah Tieskoetter, and Jacob Herold. The group finished in 44.94. Seth Greve placed 22nd in the discus (122’08”) and Jaron Todd placed 23rd in the high jump (5’07”).

For the Warrior girls, senior sprinter Ellie Loesch led the way with a pair of top-five finishes at State. The speedster placed fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.10) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (26.85). Her efforts helped the Warrior girls score nine points, placing them 30th among the Class 1A girls.

The South Winneshiek High School band is doing big things!

At the 2019 Large Group Festival, held this spring at West Central in Maynard, the Warrior concert band earned a Division I rating and the highest scores that it has received since instructor Nathan Miller took over a decade ago.

“This is a very neat thing for our program,” said Miller. “In 2016, the band got its first Division I rating in over 50 years, so to do that twice in such a short period of time is a really great accomplishment. It is pretty hard to do!”

The 23 students in the West Central Class of 2019 will walk across the stage one final time as a Blue Devil as they receive their diplomas at 7 p.m. Friday, May 24, in the WC gymnasium.

After the ceremony, those 23 students will share some hugs as they spend a final moment together as a class. The students in the Class of 2019 will go their separate ways with some heading off to college and others heading into the workforce.

One student in particular, Hailey Weidemann, has chosen an interesting field of study to enter into, which is mortuary science. Weidemann graduates on Friday not only with her high school diploma, but an Associates of Arts degree from Northeast Iowa Community College. This fall, she will attend Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny to complete the next chapter in her life.

While it isn’t a field that is widely promoted to youth in the area, Weidemann chose mortuary science because it offers her the chance to help people during some of their most vulnerable moments, which is after losing a loved-one.

“I have known for a while that whatever career path I took I wanted it to be one where I got to help people,” said the daughter of Tobey and Joelene Weidemann of Fayette. “With mortuary science, I feel like I can help a lot of people because it’s a difficult process losing a loved one.”
