Softball rallies to win opener

This Riceville runner thought that she could score from third on a pitch by the catcher. NFV’s Kennedy Lape quickly retrieved the ball and flipped to pitcher Makenna Koch who had plenty of time to apply the tag during the TigerHawk’s 4-3 victory Wednesday, May 24 in West Union. NFV opened the 2019 season with a win at home Wednesday, May 22, over Riceville. However, it took a last-inning, three-run rally to secure a 4-3 win.

Neither offense could do much early. The TigerHawks threatened in the second. With one on, Abby Reichter and Kennedy Lape hit back-to-back screaming liners  – both right at the center fielder.

A day after signing the Empower Rural Iowa Act, Iowa governor Kim Reynolds made a stop in West Union and visited with a couple local businesses.

Reynolds started her tour at the West Union Chamber — A Main Street Community’s office before heading over to Euphoria Coffee’s new location on Elm Street, in the former Iowa Food Hub building. While the location is currently under construction, Nick Yost, Euphoria Coffee owner, did have a sample of his coffee for the governor to taste. He also gave her a bag of coffee to take back with her to Des Moines.

The City of West Union met with representatives from Unilock and Culvers on Thursday, May 23, to continue discussions about why pavers are failing in West Union’s downtown district.

Adam Keller, mayor; Kennon Gumm, city councilman; Nick McIntyre, city administrator; and Jon Biederman, Fehr Graham Engineering, walked around South Vine Street by Biederman’s office and Elm Street by Winers with Brad Punke, Unilock territory manager; and Nick Jensen, Culver’s Lawn and Landscaping project manager, to show them the extent to which the pavers continue to fail.

During the short tour, Punke was able to take pictures of the failing pavers. McIntyre noted to him that they used to host a lot of tours of the Streetscape project, but that the City has started turning tours away because of the conditions of the pavers.

“It’s like this all over,” McIntyre said to Punke as they looked at some Pavers on Elm Street. “We are seeing a higher-failure rate and that’s why we wanted to have another conversation.”
