While much of what she does on a regular basis goes unnoticed to the majority of the public, the work done by Ossian City Clerk Joyce Bakewell on a daily basis is vital to the functionality of the community. In honor of the upcoming Municipal Clerks Week, which is Sunday, May 5, through Saturday, May 11, this article provides a closer look at the responsibilities and duties of Ossian’s longtime City Clerk.

“I began working for the City of Ossian on August 1, 1079,” said Bakewell, who grew up in Ossian and worked as a city clerk in Urbana for one year prior to returning home. “It isn’t really a job that you can go to school for, although I do have a business administration degree from Luther.”

When Bakewell assumed the duties of clerk from previous city clerk of 21 years Irvin Fosaaen, it was somewhat of a crash course for her.

The sports of archery and bow hunting have evolved a lot since the days of Robin Hood. While the concept of shooting an arrow is a fairly simple one, the amount of research and technology that goes into giving the shooter the smoothest and fastest experience possible is one that many could not imagine.

Enter Xpedition Archery; a Decorah-based company that produces some of the highest quality of bows in the industry.

“Xpedition is actually about seven years old,” explained Curt Headington, a Decorah native and the company’s vice president of operations. “It was originally founded by Applied Engineering in Yankton, S.D., which is a notable name in the aerospace industry.”

It has been a year since Ben Davis was promoted to police chief of Fayette after former chief Richard Pisanti resigned to move back to Florida.

Over the last year, Davis has provided consistent leadership that has helped the four-officer department thrive in a time where attitudes toward police officers aren’t always positive. Davis has been able to maintain a level of respect between his department and the residents of Fayette by delivering a clear and concise message to his officers.
