Old man winter has reared his ugly head this winter causing many school cancellations, event postponements, and unsafe travel conditions.

Despite the cities, county, and state’s best efforts, there have been times this winter where highways and county roads have had to be closed due to large snowdrifts across the asphalt. While many stay home in the comfort of their warm homes, law enforcement and, to a lesser degree, other first responders have to bear the brunt of winter.

When Mother Nature brought blizzard conditions to northeast Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 24, it was law enforcement officers like Shad Roys of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office that had to bear the responsibility of helping keep the traveling public safe. It was a busy Sunday shift for the Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputy with approximately 85 calls for cars in the ditch or accidents reported that day. Roys commented that it was some of the worst winter weather he had ever witnessed during his 21-year career in law enforcement.

$100,000 richer after scratch-off win

After a particularly slow day selling scratch tickets at the Casey’s General Store in Clermont, Casey’s employee Henrietta De la Rosa decided to try her luck after her shift when she purchased one of the Iowa Lottery’s “Spectacular Riches” scratch game tickets.  Much to Henrietta’s surprise, the ticket was one of eight large prizes and the Clermont resident won $100,000.

“We hadn’t sold any tickets that particular day, and I thought ‘why not just grab one?’” said Henrietta de la Rosa said of her decision to purchase one of the Iowa Lottery’s “Spectacular Riches” scratch game tickets a couple weeks ago.

“I started scratching, and couldn’t believe my eyes,” the Clermont woman recalled of the moment she first realized she had a winning ticket. “I thought it said I had won a thousand dollars and that just seemed unreal!”

But little did the grandmother realize, it was about to get even more unreal, as she figured out what she had actually won in the game.

March 9, 1994, will go down as one of the most famous dates in North Fayette High School athletics history.

The date marked the school’s first and only Girls’ State Basketball appearance as the team capped a 17-6 season with an appearance at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines.

“It was a game that no one expected us to win,” said the team’s head coach Cheryl Gade 25 years later, referring to her team’s 38-31 win over Mason City Newman to advance to State. “The game was played at Charles City and it was a super intense atmosphere. In fact, I just watched a replay of the game last night.”
