The South Winneshiek wrestling team sent a pair of wrestlers to the 2019 Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament last weekend in Des Moines as 106-pounder Ethan Maldonado and 152-pounder Logan Schnuelle suited up for the Warriors at Wells Fargo Arena.

“We had a great experience this week in Des Moines. It is always great getting our guys down to the State meet, but getting two kids who will be back on our team (next season) is even better,” said coach Jake Elsbernd. “Ethan and Logan can bring this experience from the week back to the rest of the team and can hopefully help lead us in the future.”

Led by senior Carter Meyer, freshmen Brady Jaster and Scarlett Gansen, and seventh-grader Rachel Meyer, the team has its sights set on the Iowa State competition, which will be held this weekend in Coralville.

“We were a finalist in the second qualifying match at the Super Qualifier, which was held in Sioux City,” explained co-coach John Erickson, who is joined by fellow coach Kristy Meyer in helping teach the young students. “We are technically called the coaches, but the team does a pretty good job of planning and building on its own.”
