Markus Hawes is an incredible young man. That much is evident when you first meet the Upper Iowa University Tutor Center manager who is a paraplegic.

It’s definitely his upbeat and persevering attitude, despite an unfortunate accident that changed his life almost eight years ago, that makes him stand out.

In 2011, five days after graduating from Waukon High School, Hawes was at baseball practice when he got himself into a pickle between third base and home plate. Trying to avoid being tagged, he dove for home, collided with the team’s catcher, and broke his C7 vertebrae. Life was never the same after that moment.

“I was taken by ambulance to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon and then airlifted to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.,” Hawes recalled. “After the accident, I spent six weeks at Mayo, where I pushed hard in physical therapy so I could get home. I was released on July 1, and I spent the rest of the summer at my parent’s house.”

To say that the visiting Postville Pirates, winless so far this season, were outmatched would be a major understatement.

NFV rattled off the first 39 points of the game! The TigerHawks led, 31-0, after eight minutes and kept on scoring with a 20-7 bulge in the second quarter. Both teams substituted freely in the second half as NFV held on to an 18-5 advantage, eventually winning 67- 12.

The North Fayette Valley   boys' basketball team finally got back in action Friday at home against Postville after a two-week shut down because of the weather.

“We did get some practices in, but not that much,” acknowledged co-head coach Dan Hovden.

The long-time TigerHawk mentor needn’t have worried as the boys took care of business, 66-57.

North Fayette Valley had a very successful day at Saturday’s Upper Iowa Conference Wrestling Meet, finishing second in the nine-team field.

The 2019 meet expanded to nine teams with Riceville’s entrance to the UIC in wrestling; Tripoli was voted in last year.

No one really expected any team to derail MFL/MM who was the only squad with a full line-up, and featured many ranked wrestlers. The Bulldogs did win, compiling 236.5 points.

The TigerHawks finished a strong second with 197 points with South Winn earning 183.5 points.

NFV head coach Jacob Pedersen put the meet in perspective when he said, “In reality, our kids overachieved. It’s amazing to score almost 200 points with only 12 guys in the lineup.”

Gunner Rodgers and Weston Fantz were repeat champions and Levi Lauer won his first title. Jesse Daughton and Dylan Durnan were runners-up.
