On Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 28, the Winneshiek County Supervisors certified the canvass of the recount of Winneshiek County votes in Iowa House District 55 at a special meeting.

After a recount also took place in Clayton County, Michael Bergan is still the winner of the election. He defeated Democrat Kayla Koether unofficially, 6,924-6,915, who had called for a recount in those two counties but didn’t call for a recount in Fayette County. The results will remain unofficial until the state certifies the election on Monday, Dec. 3.

PIVO Brewery in Calmar, which first opened its doors along with upstairs business Blepta Studios on Nov. 22, 2017, has quickly become one of the most popular microbreweries in the entire state. Owned and operated by Calmar’s own Craig and Sara Nuezil, the local brewery ranked in the top 20 out of the 92 licensed Iowa breweries in the state with regard to volume of beer produced in 2018 – a stellar statistic for a business that just celebrated its first-year anniversary.

“The most satisfying part of having our business opening during the past year has been seeing so many of our friends and neighbors enjoying what we’ve built,” stated Craig, a retired member of the U.S. Air Force. “We wanted to create a welcoming community gathering spot, and I think we’ve accomplished that goal.”

Throughout the first year in business, the microbrewery has brewed and sold approximately 50 different flavors of beers, including its 25 standard beers and many other experimental beers.

At this year’s “Magic of Christmas” in Ossian, MQ B&B, owned by Quentin and Mary Quandahl, will be one of several homes on display during the featured home tours. The spacious bed and breakfast, which is also the home of the Quandahls, features two floors and many rooms decorated with holiday spirit, which will be on display for the public this weekend.

“We decided to purchase the house last year with the intentions of turning it into a bed and breakfast,” explained Mary, who has been attending the “Magic of Christmas” tours for the last five years. “Quentin and I were asked to be a part of the ‘Magic of Christmas’ last year, but we still had a lot to do. So we are happy to be one of the featured homes this year!”

The process of transforming the bed and breakfast into a winter wonderland is one for which that Mary enlisted the help of her niece, Wendy Huinker, and 6-year-old great-niece, Kinley.

Kylie's Loops of Love

The holiday season is a time for giving, and Kylie Oakland of Elgin is in the giving spirit.

She recently started Kylie’s Loops of Love, and plans to donate blankets she makes from Loopity Loops yarn.

“At United Methodist Church in West Union, we recently made lap-sized quilts and donated them to hospice,” Oakland said. “I got the idea of making them myself and donating them to Ronald McDonald Houses, women’s and children’s shelters, and nursing homes.”

While she got the idea from church, her passion for giving back runs much deeper. Her younger brother, Jonathan, has been in and out of hospitals, so Kylie has witnessed firsthand the power of a donation.

Celebrate the season as Gov. William Larrabee's 1874 Montauk historical site welcomes visitors to its annual Holiday Open House from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1-2, in Clermont.

“The open house is usually just held on Sunday, but this year we are expanding to also include Saturday,” said Hannah Frederick, Montauk Historic Site Coordinator.  “I decided to open it up for both days because there is so much going on once December hits that I wanted to give people more of a chance to come check out the event!”

This year, Frederick decided to go a little more traditional with the decorations and has adorned the historic mansion with beautiful Victorian-era decorations.

The North Fayette Valley Community Coalition (NFVCC) has received a Drug-Free Community (DFC) grant.  With this new funding, NFVCC has been able to create a new program that will work as a prevention partnership to reduce youth substance abuse in Fayette County.

“With this grant, we will be able to not only identify what needs we have in our area, but also build in a goal and networking opportunities to provide a safer and healthier community through prevention programs,” said Stacie Schroeder, the newly appointed DFC coordinator.  “Our role will be to work to address substance abuse concerns through direct programs, as well as partner with a number of agencies and community groups to connect resources.”

“We have already started putting the initial steps into place,” added Teresa Burrack, who will serve as the Youth Initiative coordinator for the program.
