The Warrior volleyball team had a busy week, opening Upper Iowa Conference play Thursday against Clayton Ridge before competing in tournament action on Saturday in Jesup.

South Winn traveled to Guttenberg Thursday evening to take on the Eagles of Clayton Ridge. 

“We have been struggling to find the right lineup to earn success,” said SW coach Glenna Munuswamy. “This match against Clayton Ridge really brought that to the forefront.”

The South Winn girls’ and boys’ cross country teams traveled to Decorah Saturday morning for the Luther All-American Invitational.

Only two girls and two boys competed in their respective varsity races with the rest of the Warrior runners competing in the junior varsity races.

The Warriors kicked off district play with a big win over Postville on Friday night in Calmar. South Winn scored on offense, defense, and special teams during the 60-14 rout of the Pirates in a well-balanced attack.

“We made some structural changes to our football team during the week and put together a solid game plan,” said coach Jason Ohrt, whose Warrior team is now 2-1 on the season. “The game plan was well-executed by our kids.”

Delbert Hageman, age 84, of Calmar, IA died on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 12) at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. The Rev. Robert Gross will be the celebrant.

Interment will be in the church cemetery. Casket bearers will be sons Loren Hageman, Delbert Lee Hageman, Jeff Hagemann, and Lowell Hageman, and grandsons Zachary Njus, Michael Hageman, Steven Hageman, Devin Ehrie, Matthew Hageman, Derek Reisner, and Trevor Vobr.

Arrangements are being handled by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, in Calmar.

Delbert Joseph Hageman was born on March 16, 1934, the son of August and Theresa (Schmitt) Hageman, on the family farm near Calmar, IA.  

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. 

Delbert attended St. Aloysius Catholic School.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Marie G Tieskoetter, 88, of Ossian will be celebrated at noon Friday, Sept. 14, at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian.

Burial will be held in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church. The rosary will be recited at 3:45 p.m., and a Scripture Service will begin at 7 p.m. There will also be a one-hour visitation before Mass at the church on Friday.

Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Ossian is in charge of arrangements.

Marie died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian.

Meyer appointed

Meyer appointed

The South Winneshiek school board announced the appointment of new board member Corey Meyer during last week’s Sept. 5 meeting. Meyer will complete the term of former District 2 boardmember Jenny Johnson, whose resignation was formally accepted on Wednesday night, Sept. 5, as well.

 

Meyer will remain on the school board through 2019, when the next board election is held.

Ida 'Betty' Osterhus

Ida 'Betty' Osterhus

 

 

Ida Osterhus (known as Betty to her family and friends) died Friday, Aug. 17, 2018 at Care Manor in Mountain Home, Ark.  

On Aug. 1, she fell, breaking her hip, pelvis and left shoulder, which resulted in a partial hip replacement surgery at Baxter Regional Medical Center.  She had fallen earlier in March, breaking three ribs and a vertebra in her spine, but healed quickly and enjoyed several months at home before her fall in August.  

She would have celebrated her 92nd birthday in November.

Betty was born on Nov. 29, 1926 in rural Castalia, IA to Knute and Clara Solheim.  

She was united in marriage to Richard Ernest Osterhus on March 29, 1944 at Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Ossian, IA.  Four children, LaVerne, Ronald, Richard Jr. and Lynette were born to this union.

South Winneshiek’s 2018 Homecoming is this week!

This year’s theme is “Decades of Winning Tradition” and will be celebrated throughout the week of Sept. 10 - 14, with a hallway decorating competition set to kick things off Friday, Sept. 7.

Dress-up days for this year’s celebration are as follows:

• Monday – The Age-Old Question: Mathletes or Athletes;

• Tuesday – Not-So-Trendy (tacky clothes);

• Wednesday – Class Distinction (freshmen – ‘80s; sophomores – ‘70s; juniors – ‘90s; seniors – ‘60s);  

• Thursday – Wind of Change (tropical);

• Friday – Spirit Day!

Homecoming Day activities on Friday, Sept. 14, will include Ag Olympics and parade float decorating in the morning, followed by a pep rally at 12:35 p.m. and the King/Queen Coronation at 1:30 p.m. at the football field.

The Homecoming parade will be held at 2 p.m. through downtown Calmar.
