A longstanding piece of West Union history took a unique journey last week when the nearly-150 year-old Valleyview Wesleyan Church was moved from its original home on Franklin Street to its new spot at Heritage Farm Park in Clermont.

“This church is such a valuable piece of the past,” park volunteer Arnold Guyer said of the little white church.

“It means so much to so many people,” he continued.  “If we didn’t go through with moving it, the other option would have been demolition.  We didn’t want that to happen.”

Scoring was not hard to come by during Friday night’s matchup between West Central and Central Elkader. With over 100 points scored between the two area teams, the Blue Devils came up just short of their second win of the football season.

Central Elkader took the early advantage in the first quarter, jumping out to a 12-0 lead before Taylor Hepperle rattled off a 71-yard touchdown run to make the score 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Quarterback Adam Dolf tied the game up early in the second quarter on a short run, but the Warriors of Central responded with a touchdown of their own.

As arrangements are being made to begin some of the upgrades planned at the Upper Iowa University Recreation Center, a state board's denial of a $230,000 grant request could force changes in the project that also involves improvements at a 1920s-era pool.

The Enhance Iowa Board announced $1.026 million in Community Attraction and Tourism grant awards on Wednesday, Sept. 12, to three of the projects reviewed alongside the UIU application. The funding will go toward a library expansion in Carroll, a youth sports complex in Schleswig, and a YMCA in Washington.

A fun afternoon of listening to music, learning about local historic sites and eating delicious food will be offered by the Fayette County Tourism Council from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23. The council will offer a bus tour to the Oelwein Coliseum, Clermont Opera House and Fayette Opera House.

“Historically, they’ve done self-guided tours where you’d go to a site, and they’d give you a card to go to the next site, so you don’t know where you’re going or where you’ll end up until you get there,” said Carrie Davis, Tourism Council Director. “This is the first year the Tourism Council has done a bus tour.”
