The West Union swim team opened its season with a win Thursday in Manchester, 370-292.

“This was a really good win because we only had four days of practice,” commented head coach Kennedy Balk. “I can hardly wait to see what the kids can do over the rest of the season.”

The boys’ 8-and-under swimmers started the team in the right direction as the medley relay of Tytus Stansberry, William Kent-Thomas, Brooxton Lundgren, and Dane Wymer claimed first place.

Also in relays, the boys’ 13-14 free relay of Ryan Wettleson, John Starrett, James Baumler, and Liam McVey won gold.

Individually, Gabe Stansbery won the boys’ 9-10 50 freestyle.

For the girls, Laci Lauer won silver in the 100 individual relay, and Leah Shreve won the 25 butterfly.

Before the baseball season started, NFV head coach Dan Hovden said, “We have a really difficult early schedule against some high-quality opponents.”

Last week was a perfect illustration as the TigerHawks faced two opponents in three games, all on the road.

Monday, June 4, NFV was in Calmar to face one of the preseason favorites in the UIC. Wednesday, the team was off to Troy Mills to face unbeaten North Linn, ranked second in Class 1A.
