NFV

South Winn hosted a UIC doubleheader against North Fayette Valley on Monday, June 4, winning both games to push its winning streak to seven games.

The TigerHawks struck first in game one, taking a two-run lead after the opening half-inning. The Warriors responded well, however, rattling off eight unanswered runs on their way to a 9-4 win.

With eight Warrior batters recording at least one hit, seniors Rodney Schwartzhoff (2-4 with a double and three stolen bases) and Lucas Feltz (team-high two RBI) led the way for the SW offense.

On the mound, sophomore Noah Tieskoetter picked up the complete-game win as he allowed only four hits and rang up eight NFV batters.

Iowans headed to the polls on Tuesday, June 5, to determine whom they wanted to represent their political party in the upcoming midterm election on Nov. 6.

According to Paul Pate, Iowa secretary of state, of the 2,178,706 registered voters in the state of Iowa, 285,679 voted in the primary. It was the third-highest in Iowa’s history behind the 303,565 who voted in 2002 and 302,950 who voted in 2010. In Winneshiek County, only 1,538 (11.23 percent) of the 13,701 registered voters cast a ballot.

Other than the Republican nominee for the secretary of agriculture, the field has been set for the local, state, and federal elections.

Local

For the Winneshiek County Supervisors, which featured three unopposed races, the Democratic party will be represented by John Beard (299 votes) in District 1 and Melissa O’Rourke (346 votes) in District 2. The Republican party will be represented by Floyd Ashbacher (76 votes) in District 2 and will have no challengers in District 1.

There were no Democrats on the ballot for the County Treasurer, Recorder, and Attorney positions. Wayne Walter received 309 votes to win the Treasurer position for the Republicans, while fellow party representatives Connie Askelson-Kuennen (304 votes) earned the Recorder nomination, and Andrew Van Der Maaten (303 votes) earned the Attorney nomination.

Memories of a rockin' good time in Wadena

Thousands of “hippies” invaded the small community of Wadena in the summer of 1970 to participate in the now-legendary Rock Fest. Here, the crowd rocks out to one of the many big-name bands to perform at the event that put Wadena on the map. (Union file photo)

What do you do when your quiet village of fewer than 300 inhabitants is about to be invaded by thousands of people who are so culturally different from you that you fear them? Do you send your family to a safe place and buy a gun? Or do you engage with the visitors?

Forty-eight years ago this summer, the people of Wadena suddenly learned that up to a hundred thousand “hippies” would be coming to a hill just outside of town for an ultimate music festival, a Rock Fest that would feature the top music stars and groups of the time.

This event would be another Woodstock, a music festival held the year before in New York State that attracted 400,000 people. Organizers had hoped to recreate that famous rock festival in Galena, Ill., but the fear of drugs and pressure from the community led to an injunction against the Illinois plans.

So buyers with a certified check, which is legal tender and seals the deal, were dispatched to the beautiful hills of northeast Iowa to find a location. They said they were looking for a “horse farm,” and so unsuspecting owners “Curly” and Wilma Schmitt sold their farm just outside Wadena to them.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the event, Julie Gordon and Gordon Kelly, who were both impacted by the tornado, will be honored as grand marshals for the Maynard Days parade on Saturday, June 23.
