WU council to discuss new fireworks ordinance

West Union residents will soon have a much clearer picture of the legal use of fireworks for this Fourth of July.

A public hearing will be held on a new fireworks ordinance at the next West Union City Council meeting on Monday, May 21.

The current ordinance bans use of all consumer fireworks within the city limits of West Union. The new ordinance only deals with the consumer’s use of fireworks, not their sale. In short, the new ordinance would ban the use of first-class consumer fireworks, as described by the Code of Iowa, section 727.2, from being used within the city limits. The use of all second-class and novelty consumer fireworks will be allowed.

A blazing win for WUE third grader

West Union Elementary third-grader Keegan Weidemann proudly shows off his Fire Pevention Week poster, which took second place in the statewide contest.  His poster, which illustrates this years theme of “Every Second Counts: Plan Two Ways Out!” will be displayed in the Iowa Firefighters Hall of Flame booth at the Iowa State Fair later this summer.  (submitted photo)

“Every second counts!” reads the message on the cherry-red fire engine that sits parked in front of a large three-dimensional house, drawn and carefully shaded green by West Union Elementary third-grader Keegan Weidemann.

“Plan two ways out!” read the words on the ambulance, which sits parked just behind the engine in the detailed picture.

Both the front and back doors of the home are visible in the drawing; orange and red flames shoot out the top corner of the back door while a figure requesting Help from the emergency responders shouts from one of the upstairs front windows of the meticulously drawn home.

There is a lot going on in Keegan Weidemann’s winning fire safety poster, and that is exactly what the West Union Elementary third-grader was going for.

Heins competes in Rubik's Cube competition

A few years ago, Decklyn Heins discovered the simple, yet complex Rubik’s Cube on a random trip to Walmart. Since then, he has used YouTube to learn how to quickly solve the popular 1980s puzzle and moved onto other variations of the original. He recently bought a Speedcube Rubik’s Cube, which he is holding in his hand. (Chris DeBack photo)

It doesn’t take long to discover the plethora of toys available to children these days. From walking down the toy aisles at Walmart to shopping on websites like Amazon, children have more options than ever before when it comes to entertaining themselves.

Amidst all the G.I. Joes, Barbie dolls, Tonka trucks, and other toys that can be found in the toy section of any store, it was Rubik’s Cube that caught the eye of Decklyn Heins a couple years ago while walking through Walmart. He attempted to solve the simple, colorful, 3x3x3 puzzle cube that day before asking his parents to buy him one.

NFV Sectional Golf now Thursday

  NFV Sectional Golf now Thursday

By Jerry Wadian

The TigerHawks 2018 Class 2A Sectional Golf Tournament at New Hampton has been moved from Friday, May 11, to Thursday, May 10.
The reason for the move was a prediction for rain and bad weather on Friday. The Chickasaws had moved a prior meet to Pleasant Valley Sports Club after heavy rains flooded part of the course.
The starting time of 10 a.m. remains.
The District Meet is still set for Friday, May 18, at Fox Ridge Golf Club in Cedar Falls.
