“To help people at all times” is a central piece of the Girl Scouts of America motto.  It’s a motto that three area sisters have taken to heart, each earning top awards in her troop, the oldest earning her Gold status earlier this year.

“I have been involved in Girl Scouts for 13 years, since kindergarten,” said Hanna Schmitt, the eldest of the three girls.  “When I started, I didn’t know how far I would take it. I just really enjoyed the activities and the community involvement.”

“She was always very involved,” agreed Holly, the middle sister of the trio.  “I knew I wanted to get involved pretty early on; Hannah was having so much fun, I wanted to be part of it, too!”

The three girls, daughters of Greg and Sarah Schmitt of Waucoma, say that they not only feel a sense of pride in their accomplishments, but they also learned a lot while they were putting the projects together.

NFV girls' golf now in 2A

NFV girls' golf now in 2A

The Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) recently made a significant change in how girls’ golf is classified.

Starting this season, there will be only four classes instead of the five in most other girls’ sports. Thus, NF will compete in Class 2A this spring.

When asked about the change, NFV head coach Robin Madole got a big grin on her face as she answered, “It’ll be good for us.”

25 years of saving lives for E-911

For the last 25 years, residents in Fayette County have been able to dial 911 to reach emergency services. Before then, a local resident had to know the phone numbers for the emergency service he or she wished to reach and would be redirected to the correct emergency service if he or she dialed the wrong one. Kelly Fink, Fayette County Dispatch supervisor, answers a staged 911 call to show the different information that is displayed on her monitors. (Chris DeBack photo)

While we take for granted dialing 911 in an emergency, there hasn’t always been someone on the other end.

It has been 25 years since Fayette County’s Enhanced 911 system (E-911) went online in March 1993 and revolutionized how a resident contacts emergency services. A lot of preparation went into bringing the service online.

Let the primary season begin!

Let the primary season begin!

On Tuesday, June 5, Iowans will head to the polls to cast a vote on whom they want to represent their political party in the local, state, and federal general election in November.

Now that the filing deadline (March 28) has passed, here are the candidates who will appear on the ballot in the June primary.

Local election

With two Fayette County Supervisor seats up for grabs this fall, members on the ballot from the Democratic and Republican parties will be running unopposed in the June election.

The two Democratic candidates are Tim O’Brien of Fayette, chairman of the Fayette County Democratic Party, and Martin Ray Stanbrough of Fayette, a Fayette County Secondary Roads employee. Incumbent Fayette County Supervisors Jeanine Tellin of Maynard and Darrell Dolf of Randalia will be on the ballot for the Republicans.

With two seats up for grabs, each party can nominate two candidates to run for the positions. However, there is still the possibility with any election that a write-in candidate could win the nomination. It will be the top two vote-getters that will win the two seats in November.

Other Fayette County elected officials running unopposed for their current positions includes Kyle Jacobsen, Treasurer; Wayne Sauer, Attorney; and Karen Ford, Recorder.

For the record, these are the names that will appear on the ballot because these individuals turned in the necessary paperwork.
