It was a calling from God that inspired local pastor Leslie White and his wife, Rebecca, to organize a mission trip to help support the Wesleyan College of Nursing Science, as well as several other nearby organizations, in Anse-a-Galets on Gonave Island in Haiti.

“I have been placed in a spot that has allowed me to coordinate this trip and bring together people to help do something good,” said White, the pastor at CrossFire Church in West Union and one of nine to make the trip. “It was all part of God’s plan to allow us to do this. I think that after returning, every one of us had our hearts touched from our experiences.”

The planning process for the 10-day trip from late January to early Febrary started in 2016 while the West Union pastor attended a Wesleyan conference.

The North Fayette Valley interim school board met in regular session on Monday evening, March 12, and set the tax levy rate for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

Residents in the new North Fayette Valley Community School District will pay $11.29 per $1,000 in taxable value. That is a decrease of $2.15 from the $13.44 North Fayette levied and a decrease of $2.23 from the $13.52 Valley levied in the 2017-2018 fiscal year.

In other news, the board approved the hiring of Holly Mohs as K-8 physical education teacher at North Fayette Valley Middle School. Mohs previously taught in the Valley school district for nine years and has 16 years of teaching experience. She will replace LeVirgil Monroe, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

The board also approved the hiring of Kyle Harms as the high school vocal music teacher. Harms has spent the last three years as the seventh- through 12th-grade vocal instructor in the South O’Brien school district. He will replace Doug Poppen, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Everyone in Fayette has heard the rumblings of some downtown businesses closing if they aren’t purchased soon.

With some storefronts already empty and others that could be joining them, there have been positive additions to Fayette’s downtown business sector. Full Circle Services recently moved into the old prom dress shop; Fayette Flywheel and Fitness has hosted spinning classes for over a year; and Yoga Genesis is going strong.

Rumblings around town aren’t always negative. It has been mentioned that financials have finally been worked out for Boike’s Trailside Inn to be bought, and Upper Iowa University is preparing to make a positive announcement about its downtown building in the near future.
