The NFV boys’ and girls track teams opened the indoor season Tuesday, March 13, at the Wartburg High School Meet in Waverly.

No team scores are kept at this particular meet, but 36 schools from all four classes converged on the Waverly campus for this season-opener.

Jace Burrow (55 hurdles) and Marin Ehler (shot) each won gold medals; both athletes won the same event last season in Waverly.

Chandler Douglas and Caleb O’Hare finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 3200. Douglas also finished fourth in the 800, and O’Hare was sixth in the 1600.

Faith Johnston of Clermont was named the 2018 Iowa Brown Swiss Princess at the annual meeting of the Iowa Brown Swiss Association on Friday, March 9, at the Howard County Fairgrounds in Cresco.

Johnston got involved in the Brown Swiss industry at an early age with some encouragement from Kent and Laura Appler of Elgin.

“I got into Brown Swiss when I was 7 years old, and Kent and Laura [Appler] kind of shoved my parents into it,” said the 17-year-old daughter of Darin and Melissa Johnston. “We got little calves at first and had a really good experience. There were all these [new] people we were meeting as this is a whole industry, so that kind of pushed us to get more involved. It is what led me to getting involved with 4-H and FFA.”

On March 24, Roy Guenther will raise a glass to cheer 41 years as owner of the Top Hat Tavern in West Union.

A week later, he’ll raise a glass one final time as owner of the bar he has owned for four decades. On April 1, Nick Polfer of Postville will officially take possession of the Top Hat Tavern from Guenther. It will certainly be a bittersweet moment for the West Union man, who is giving up his business because of health issues. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in early 2017.

“It seems like I just bought into the business yesterday,” Guenther said. “I had a stroke in 2013 and now being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, my health has gone south. I’m not complaining; it is just the hand I have been dealt. It is basically like being disabled, you could say. I make trips back uptown once in a while, but I don’t do much besides checking inventories and talking with suppliers. After 41 years, it is just time.”
