With school shootings continuing to dominate national headlines, are our local schools prepared to handle such a dangerous situation?

Whether one wants to believe that it could happen in rural northeast Iowa or not, area school districts and law enforcement agencies have to be vigilant to the potential existence of such a threat.

The Fayette County Union took time to speak with Duane Willhite, North Fayette Valley superintendent; Marty Fisher, Fayette County Sheriff; and Paul Becthold, West Union police chief, about the preparation that has taken place. The newspaper also spoke to four students, senior Grace Kerr, junior Drew Berger, sophomore Ian Menne, and freshman Abby Boehm to see if they feel safe attending school in light of recent events nationwide.
