The South Winneshiek wrestling team had a stellar day on the mats Saturday at the Sectional 11 Wrestling Tournament, hosted by Sumner-Fredericksburg.

After the smoke had settled, a total of nine Warrior grapplers made sure that their seasons will continue as they placed in the top two and qualified for this weekend’s District Tournament in Decorah.

“Saturday was a great day of wrestling for the Warriors,” said head coach Jake Elsbernd. “Our kids wrestled very well. We beat some very good kids and are excited to send nine wrestlers to Districts this weekend.”

The Warrior boys’ basketball team got off to a slow start last week but fired back with a pair of Upper Iowa Conference wins to close the week.

Sumner-Fredericksburg

South Winneshiek began the week Monday night, Jan. 29, against nonconference foe Sumner-Fredericksburg in Calmar.

Despite a fast start, the Warriors suffered a 63-50 loss to the Cougars.

South Winn built an early 15-9 lead after the opening quarter, but it was outscored by a total of 37-18 over the second and third quarters.

The Warriors and Cougars each put up 17 points in the final quarter, but it was too little, too late for South Winn as it eventually fell.

Junior Levi Lukes, the leading scorer in the UIC, had a team-high 14 points in the loss. Fellow backcourt mate Hunter Todd led the way in the assist department with nine, while junior big man Cole Klimesh had a team-high 11 rebounds. Klimesh also had 11 points and three blocks.

In late January, an agreement was reached that will allow the Winneshiek County Jail to house Howard County inmates in Decorah. While the reasoning for the agreement is to allow Howard County to build a new jail in Cresco, the deal will also provide significant benefits to Winneshiek County as well.

“I feel that this is an excellent way to help a neighboring county by building a mutual-aid relationship,” pointed out Winneshiek County Sheriff Dan Marx. “The agreement will also bring additional funding into the county, which will help offset costs that would otherwise be passed on to Winneshiek County taxpayers. We saw this to be a fiscally responsible agreement that looks out for our own taxpayers.”

The contract, which officially began Feb. 1, will result in the average inmate population of the Winneshiek County Jail doubling to approximately 16-20 individuals.
