Warrior VB season ends in semifinals

By Zakary Kriener

The Warrior volleyball team saw its 2017 season come to an end Thursday night as it was ousted from the Class 2A Region 6 Tournament by Wapsie Valley, 3-0.

“We put up quite a fight against a very talented Wapsie Valley team,” said head coach Glenna Munuswamy following the loss. “We prepared for this match by trying to identify their weaknesses so we could exploit them. Unfortunately, those girls from Wapsie that had shown weakness in past matches played strong on Thursday.”

The Wapsie Valley Warriors defeated the hometown Warriors by scores of 25-21, 25-19, and 25-19.

Both the South Winneshiek boys’ and girls’ cross country teams turned in the best performances of the season Saturday at the biggest meet of the year, the State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge. The efforts were good enough to earn fifth-place finishes for both squads.

“We went into the State Meet knowing we were probably around the fourth-, fifth-, or sixth-best team on both sides,” said coach Kevin Kearney in reference to how he expected the boys’ and girls’ squads to stack up. “Our primary goal was simply to run as well as we were capable and let the chips fall and see if it was good enough to challenge for a top-three spot. We ended up with our best overall team performances on both the boys’ and girls’ side, and we are very proud of the effort of our runners.”

The South Winneshiek football team didn’t care that it was going to battle with the No. 3-ranked team in Class 1A. It wasn’t impressed with the fact that Iowa City Regina had played in the State Championship game in each of the last seven seasons. The Warriors also didn’t care that the Regals had not been beaten on their home field since 2010.

Instead, South Winn was focused on the things it needed to do to advance to the next round of the 2017 Class 1A State Football Playoffs.

Up for the challenge, South Winn and Iowa City Regina exchanged blows throughout much of the first quarter, but neither team took command.

With 2 minutes left in the opening quarter, the high-powered Regal offense struck first with a 28-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead.

Midway through the second quarter, Iowa City Regina again found the end zone as it scored on a 15-yard touchdown pass to grab a 14-0 lead over the Warriors.

Later in the quarter, threatening to go up by another touchdown, the Warrior defense stepped up to the plate and said “not so fast.”

“Oh, one last kiss, just give me one last kiss.”

Famous singer Conrad Birdie, played by South Winneshiek senior Manning Kuboushek, is being drafted into the Army and has been given the opportunity to give one lucky lady a final kiss on national television before heading off.

Conrad’s songwriter pens the song “One Last Kiss” for Conrad’s final television appearance before heading off to war, in hopes that it will bring in enough money to get out of the music business and start his career as an English teacher.

The musical is full of funny one-liners and catchy songs that will have the audience wanting to come back to see the show again and again.

Don’t miss the hilarious musical “Bye, Bye, Birdie,” which is full of 1960s Elvis-style rock-and-roll music with showtimes at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10 and 11, and at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12.
