NFV girls 4-0 in golf

Mariah Wettleson blasts out of the sand Monday, April 10, in Ossian as the NFV girls beat their hosts from South Winn. Wettleson’s shot landed near the cup for an easy putt. She is one of several juniors who are good enough to shoot varsity on a number of teams in the UIC, but she   is a reliable performer for an NFV team that is loaded with top-flight talent. “It was a long week with a lot of golf,” commented NFV head boys’ golf coach Derek Heins after his squad finished competing in three UIC meets and an 18-hole tourney in just five days.

The golf tournament at Waverly on Friday is always a good test of where a team is at this point of the season.

Judging by its third-place finish, NFV should feel pretty good.

Assessed values in county rise 5.6 percent

Assessed values in county rise 5.6 percent

Assessed values on residential properties, used to determine the amount of property tax someone would pay, rose approximately 5.6 percent this year across Fayette County.

That doesn’t mean everyone saw a 5.6 percent increase; rather, the increase or decrease varied based upon an individual’s property. The property taxes based on these new assessments won’t be paid until fall 2018 and spring 2019.

Carolyn Koester doesn’t want to be called an inspiration.

“[My friends at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado] tell me I’m an inspiration,” she said. “I have never tried to be anyone's inspiration. I have just been me; I just live my life.”

However, it's hard not to be inspired by this courageous, tough as nails woman.
