Seraphia Christine Uhlenhake, 97, of Ossian, Iowa died Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa. Seraphia Christine was born January 3, 1920 in rural Ossian, Iowa to Theodore and Christine (Gehling) Uhlenhake.

As a young woman, Seraphia worked with her parents on the family farm and soon began her lifetime calling as a Catholic Priests’ housekeeper, serving at many parishes in the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Her longest tenure was for Rev. Vincent Simon for whom she worked for 45 years. They retired to Ossian in 1991, and Fr. Simon passed away in 2004.  Seraphia became a resident of the Ossian Senior Hospice following a broken hip in November of 2013.

The Turkey River Recreational Corridor will host business training seminars in Elgin, Clermont, and Elkader over the next couple of weeks.

The first one was held in Elgin on Wednesday, March 1; however, due to Ash Wednesday, no one attended the meeting at the Elgin Public Library. Business owners in the area, which can be anyone and not just businesses in Elgin, Clermont and Elkader, can attend the next meeting at at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, at the Elkader City Hall.

The final meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, in the Larrabee Building in Clermont. Note: You only have to attend one of the trainings; TRRC is just making it more accessible by hosting it in multiple locations.

Teaching has come full circle for North Fayette Valley Middle School teacher Shirleen Reinhardt.

She got into teaching hoping to one day be a family and consumer science teacher, and now she will end her career teaching that subject to seventh-graders.

Kierstin is the granddaughter of Helen (Kenn) Miller of West Union and the late Howard Whitcher.

Leonard E. Benter, 86, of Oelwein, Iowa died Friday morning, March 3, 2017 at Grandview Healthcare Center in Oelwein.

Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Monday, March 6, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein with Pastor Dave Byrd officiating.

Visitation: 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein and after 9:30 A.M. Monday at the church.

Interment: Hawkeye Cemetery, Hawkeye, Iowa.

A Memorial Fund has been established in his name.

Leonard Earl Benter was born December 28, 1930 in rural Hawkeye, Iowa, the son of George William and Lillian Clara (Lewig) Benter. 

He graduated from West Union High School in West Union, Iowa.  

On Dec. 20, 1948, he was united in marriage to Betty Lou Springer at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye.
