Eugene Thorson

 

 

Eugene Thorson, 91, of Clermont, Iowa died Friday, January 27, 2017 at his home in Clermont.

Alf Eugene Thorson, the son of Alphie and Myrtle (Lien) Thorson, was born September 30, 1925 on a farm in rural Clermont. 

He graduated from Clermont High School in 1943.

Eugene was united in marriage with Anna Bachtell at the Ossian Lutheran Church in 1953. To this union five children, Catherine, Barbara, Pamela, Mark, and Evan, were born. 

Eugene and Anna farmed outside of Clermont for many years. He retired from farming about three years ago. In addition to farming, Eugene was a substitute rural mail carrier for several years. 

Eugene was a member of the East Clermont Lutheran Church and served on the church council.

He was also a board member of the Gunder Cheese Factory.

Charles Deering

Charles Deering

 

 

Charles I. Deering, 80, of Postville, Iowa, died Friday January 27, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Postville.

He was born May 16, 1936 to Irving Charles and Leeone (Zieman) Deering on the home farm in rural Postville, where he resided for 65 years. 

Charles was baptized July 19, 1936 by Rev. R.B. Garten and confirmed on April 2, 1950 by Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig. 

Charles graduated from Postville High School in 1954, attended Iowa State University and then returned to the family farm. 

On June 16, 1957 he was united in marriage to Carol Meyer at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church by Rev. Charles E. Witt.  To this union six children were born.

Charles was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville.

The North Fayette Valley wrestling team will compete in Sectional action Saturday in New Hampton. The action will begin at noon with the top two wrestlers in each weight class moving on to District action Saturday, Feb. 11, in Decorah.

The New Hampton Sectional features 19 grapplers ranked in the top 10 in their respective weight classes.

Host New Hampton, the top team in Class 2A, leads the way with 10 ranked wrestlers!

The North Fayette Valley boys’ bowling team won its second consecutive game, beating Oelwein Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Viper Lanes in Oelwein.

The streak continued Friday when the TigerHawks went to Waterloo to take on Columbus.

The Decorah swim team finished fourth at the North Central Swim Conference Meet on Saturday in Newton.

Earlier in the week, the swimmers were finally able to get the Parents Night meet in Thursday against Mason City. The meet had been postponed three times by bad weather.

The North Fayette Valley girls’ basketball team went 2-1 last week to move three games over 500 for the season at 10-7.

The week opened Tuesday, Jan. 24, with a tough, one-point home loss to powerful Clayton Ridge, 42-41. Friday, the TigerHawks beat South Winn in Calmar, 46-30, and the next night in Decorah, the gals beat the Vikings, 34-23.

North Fayette and Valley special election is Tuesday, Feb. 7

North Fayette and Valley special election is Tuesday, Feb. 7

 

 

The fate of the North Fayette and Valley school districts will be decided in six days when members of those communities head to the polls on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

The patrons of each district will be voting on whether or not to merge the two districts to officially become North Fayette Valley Community School District, and then vote on a Revenue Purpose Statement for the new district.

The Revenue Purpose Statement will remain the same as it currently is, but because a new district is formed, it needs to be voted on again.

Everyone knows North Fayette Valley’s Dan Hovden is one of the best baseball head coaches around.

After all, his overall record is 662 wins and 397 losses; over 560 of those wins have been in West Union. His win total ranks him 25th all-time in Iowa high school baseball history; he is also eighth among active coaches in total wins.

Since his arrival in 1993, Hovden has won six UIC titles, five District titles and sent four teams to the State Baseball Tournament in either Marshalltown or Des Moines. Hovden has also been named the Northeast Iowa District Coach of the Year three times.

Well, the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association (IAHSBCA) concurs.
