'Magic of Christmas' this weekend

 

 

“Magic” will certainly be in the air this weekend as “The Magic of Christmas” comes to Ossian.

The annual event is set to begin with an opening gala from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Silver Springs Country Club. At the opening gala, visitors will be able to view holiday trees and tables while also enjoying a winetasting, hors d’oeuvres, cider, and coffee. Tickets are available for $10 each.

Montauk Christmas Open House and Vespers Service

 

 

All are invited to the annual Montauk Christmas Open House to be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4.

Visitors can catch a ride in a horse-drawn wagon to Montauk’s front door. The home will be decorated for the holidays by local organizations and community members; there will be a beautiful Christmas tree in every room!

The next time a person is traveling into Clermont, he or she will have a little help keeping his or her speed in check, thanks to two new radar speed signs at either end of Highway 18.

St. Peter’s Knights of Columbus purchased the speed signs for the city using a Fayette County Community Foundation grant.

Earl J. Anderson, 72, of Hawkeye, died Friday, November 25, 2016, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

 

Funeral Services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Randalia on Tuesday November 29, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Julie Ahrens officiating. Interment will follow at Dunham Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday preceding the service at the church. Memorials may be made in his name to the United Methodist Church in Randalia. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye is assisting Earl’s family. For outsiders coming from a bustling metropolis, getting used to the slow-paced, small-town lifestyle here in northeast Iowa can take some time.

However, some adjust more quickly than others, especially those looking for such a change in their lives. It hasn’t taken much for Fayette Police Chief Richard Pisanti and his wife, Coleen, to adjust from living in a county of 1.8 million people to a town of just over 1,500 residents.

A VVCC fundraiser now a tradition for area families

What started as a fundraiser for an area gun club has now turned into a Christmas tradition for many families in Fayette County.

Over the next couple weekends, many will venture out onto the 63 acres owned by the Volga Valley Conservation Club (VVCC) Christmas tree farm off 150th Street in rural Fayette in search of that perfect Christmas tree.

Thomas Lee “Doc” Bennett, 74, of West Union, Iowa, passed away Monday, November 21, 2016, at Gundersen-Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union.

Thomas Lee Bennett, the son of Chuck and Mildred (Palmer) Bennett, was born November 6, 1942, in Harlan, Iowa. 

He grew up in Manning, Iowa, where he excelled in academics and sports, especially basketball. He graduated from Manning High School in 1961.

Tom then attended the University of South Dakota on a basketball scholarship, graduating with a degree in chemistry. “Go, Coyotes!”

He continued his education at the University of Iowa Dental School, graduating in 1969. 

Thomas was united in marriage with Gay Gantt on August 24, 1969, in Pasadena, California.

That same year, Tom and Gay moved to West Union, Iowa, and set up West Union Dental Clinic. He operated the business until his retirement in 2011.

Keith A. Markow, 83, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2016, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 1, 2016, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, Iowa, with burial following at Warren Powers Cemetery in Adelphi.

 Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Overton Funeral Home. Family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Keith Allen Markow was born in Osage and grew up in the Des Moines area.

He married Juanita on May 2, 1953.

Keith served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Upon returning to Des Moines, the couple started a family and created a welcome, loving home.

The family lived in Des Moines, Baxter and West Union before moving to Indianola in 1979.

Vernon Henry Wedo, 88 of Elgin, Iowa died Saturday, November 26, 2016 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. 

Vernon Henry, the son of Fred and Amela (Miller) Wedo, was born on August 14, 1928 in Elgin, Iowa.

Vernon graduated from Elgin High School in 1946.

After high school he worked for Fayette County.

Vernon was united in marriage with Virginia Lea Borwig on January 31, 1951 in Elgin, Iowa.  To this union, two children were born, Larry and Terry.

Vernon served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War.

After his military service, he worked for Dale Upham and then Holland Brothers and finally, Reilly Construction as a heavy equipment operator. He then took a position as the Road Foreman of Fayette County until his retirement in 1990.

Vernon was a member of the Elgin American Legion and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elgin.
