The South Winneshiek volleyball team got its busy week started Tuesday, Oct. 11, as it traveled to West Union to take on North Fayette Valley in the final match of the regular season.

The TigerHawks proved to be too much for the Warriors, as NFV took all three matches to claim the win.

After a lengthy road trip to Lake Mills Friday night for a matchup between the two teams tied for second place in Class 1A District 2, the Warriors made themselves at home on their way to a 24-10 win.

Marie Linderbaum of Ossian will be celebrating her 95th birthday with a card shower on Sunday, Oct. 30.

She was born to Ole and Emma Louise Ingvalson of Spring Grove, Minnesota, on Oct. 30, 1921. She married Edward Linderbaum (deceased) on June 1, 1941. Their children include Marilyn Bohr, Marcia (Joe) Bullerman, and Terry Linderbaum.

Meet Blake Moen, a 2012 graduate of nearby Decorah High School and 2016 graduate of Luther College, who officially began last week.

At approximately 6:36 p.m. Sunday evening, the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office received several 911 calls reporting gunshots fired in the area of Dogwood Road in Freeport  near Decorah.

When a responding deputy arrived on the scene at 2472 Dogwood Road, two deceased individuals with gunshot wounds were discovered.

Annexation of the Elgin Co-op is still an option for the Elgin City Council and was discussed again at Monday night’s meeting. While voluntary annexation seems out of the question at this point, the council is considering pursuing involuntary annexation to capture some revenue from the Co-op.

“Health comes from the inside out,” said Dr. Jessica Dean, DC, owner of Dean Family Chiropractic in Clermont.  “Chiropractic care is so much more than just muscular and skeletal; regular adjustments can ease many things from ear infections, the common cold, or ease a variety of chronic illnesses.”

October is National Chiropractic Health Month, and Dr. Dean feels fortunate to be able to be practicing in the field.

It took West Central the better part of three quarters to crack the Central Elkader defense in a 60-14 road loss Friday, Oct. 14.

Senior quarterback Brady Forsyth got the Blue Devils on the board with a two-yard scramble with 1:46 remaining in the third quarter. Jake Kuhens made the extra point, but he had missed a 33-yard field goal opportunity in the second quarter that could have gotten the Blue Devils on the board.

Joanne Piorkowski, 59, of St. Olaf, formerly of Oelwein, died at Scenic Acres, St. Olaf on Sunday, October 16, 2016 of natural causes.

 

Memorial services will be held at 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 21, 2016, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette. Visitation will continue following the service until 8:00 p.m.

 

She was born July 14, 1957 in West Union, IA, the daughter of Henry "Hank" and Marion Seago.  Joanne graduated from North Fayette High School in 1975.  She married Richard Piorkowski on October 27, 2010.

 

Joanne enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing, cooking and her lunch outings.

 

She is survived by her husband Richard; brothers: Don Seago, Jim (Robin) Seago, Tom Seago; sisters Connie (Kert) VanGorder, Jamie (Dan) Seago, Teresa (Noah) Froelke and many nieces and nephews.
