Celebrating an undying friendship

Vel Orth (right) invited his friend Dennis Rear to accompany him to Charlotte, North Carolina, as he took some personal items to his son Brad, who lives there. The two went on quite the adventure, from dipping their toes in the Atlantic Ocean at Myrtle Beach to riding in the back of Barney Fife’s police car. Chris DeBack photo

For best friends Dennis Rear and Vel Orth, life hasn’t been the easy the last couple of months.

Both men lost their wives just 10 days apart; Rear’s wife, Carla, died on June 18, while Orth’s wife, Mary, died on June 28. While it is hard to lose one’s better half, both men understand that the women they loved are in a better place.

It seemed as if NFV had a picket row of hands at the net every time Waukon tried a kill during Wednesday’s Class 3A volleyball playoff match in West Union.
