A fun ride that started with a simple dream

Skip-A-Way Resort in Clermont was inspired by a dream of Justin “Skip” Baker (left) as he walked the banks of the Turkey River. Justin and his partner, wife Bev (second from left), helped the campground grow, which it continues to do under co-owners (l-r) Terri and Steve Baker. (Chris DeBack photo)

It’s not often you won’t find a phone in Terri Baker’s hand.

The co-owner of Skip-A-Way Resort in Clermont is usually on the phone trying to help a camper with an issue.

On Wednesday morning, Aug. 24, she was on her phone for a different reason. The day before, it had rained approximately 11 inches in Cresco. Fayette County Emergency Management had warned that potential flooding downstream could occur over the next couple of days. With trailers right on the banks of the Turkey River, Baker was on the phone all morning, calling campers to pull their trailers out.

Olsons get 'flood' of help

Cheryl and Greg Olson are pictured outside their Eldorado home at the area where a wall caved into their basement at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday night, Aug. 24. One of the footings ended up lodged against the basement door leading up the steps to the main floor on the south side of the house. After experiencing two 500-year floods within eight years, the Olsons have decided to move their house to higher ground on their property and place it on a concrete slab with no basement. After recovering from a 500-year flood in 2008, Greg and Cheryl Olson never expected to relive similar heartache as the Turkey River crested two feet higher than all records, at 23.92 feet, on Thursday, Aug. 25.

With heavy rainfall in the Cresco area early that week, the Olsons and their neighbors in Eldorado began watching National Weather Service river gauges to decide whether they’d need to move belongings to higher ground.

“Even though it is hard to actually compare week to week since conditions and courses change, there was no doubt that we saw overall improvement across-the-board from our times of last week,” commented head coach Tracy Nuss after his team returned from its meet Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Oelwein.

In a much tougher field of runners, the NFV girls finished seventh in the 15-team field, and five schools did not have full teams. The boys were 12th.
