Following significant flooding by the Turkey River that filled the Inwood Ballroom at Riverside Park with several feet of water, the cleanup process began. Remaining water, mud, and sand were removed from the historic building, revealing the ballroom’s wood recently installed dance floor. Within 10 days, thanks in large part to volunteers, the historic ballroom was able to open once again for an anniversary celebration on the grounds. (Zakary Kriener photo)

It was 1922 – almost 100 years ago – when the iconic Inwood Ballroom first opened its doors for business in the small Czech town of Spillville.
In the early morning hours of Wednesday, Aug. 24, after over seven inches of rain fell throughout Winneshiek County, the banks of the Turkey River began to expand.
The ballroom, which sits inside the beautiful Riverside Park, began to see water levels approach the structure.
