NF Elementary forms PTO

 

Parents, teachers and faculty at North Fayette Elementary have come together to create the North Fayette Parent-Teacher Organization (NFPTO). The brainchild of NF Elementary principal Travis Elliott (far right), he has seen it been successful at a number of different schools in the Waterloo Community School District, where he used to work. The more parents are involved in a child's education, the greater the chance that child will succeed.

North Fayette Elementary, which consists of the West Union and Fayette elementary attendance centers, has launched North Fayette Parent-Teacher Organization (NFPTO) that will be in full swing this coming fall.

Town & Country Breakfast

 

 

 

The Fayette County Fair, in cooperation with Nabholz Farm, will be holding a Town and Country Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 18.

The breakfast, which will be held at Nabholz Farm (24807 Neon Road, West Union), will accept freewill donations to be used for the ongoing restoration of the Fayette County Fairgrounds buildings and infrastructure.

Transportation from the fairgrounds to the farm will be provided via the Tap’t Out limo bus.

Enemy WWII flags signed by U.S. troops on display at Hawkeye Fun days

During Hawkeye Fun Days a flag ceremony at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, June 18, will display these Nazi and Japanese flags signed by American troops who fought in World War II and took as “war trophies.” The three children of Roy Knight of Elgin, (l-r) Janice Tirzmalis, Jack and Noel Knight, hold the Nazi flag with theirs fathers signature on it. The Japanese flag is held by (l-r) Arlo Copp’s niece Sheryl Seitsinger and nephews Mike and Dennis Copp; Arlo’s signature is on the World War II flag. The signature of J.D. Shaffer of West Union is also on the Nazi flag, but no living relatives have been tracked down at this point.

World War II redefined global conflict. World War I “was the war to end all wars,” but ended up setting the stage for WWII. WWII continues to shape the path of human history to this day.

As American, British, French, Soviet and other Allied forces slowly began to turn back the Axis Powers, soldiers took enemy flags as war trophies.

Warrior girls 4th at State golf

 

The South Winneshiek girls’ golf team placed fourth at the 2016 State Golf Meet Tuesday and Wednesday, May 31 and June 1, at Hester Park in Granger. The 2016 girls’ high school golf season came to an end last week at Jester Park Golf Course in Granger. The Warriors returned home with fourth-place hardware after shooting a team score of 727 in the Class 2A State Golf Tournament.

Jerome "Jerry" Ameling

Jerome "Jerry" Ameling

 

 

    Jerome “Jerry” Ameling, age 63, of Ossian, IA, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous 7 year battle with cancer.

Jerome Clarence Ameling was born on December 16, 1952, the son of Clarence and Ida (Smith) Ameling in West Union, IA.  He attended St. John’s grade school and graduated from South Winneshiek High School in 1972.  Jerry was united in marriage to Joan Schrandt on October 17, 1981, at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, IA.  He worked several jobs over the years, Weselmann Meat Market, White Farms, the Milwaukee Railroad and then Calmar Manufacturing where he worked for many years until his health forced him to retire in 2009.
