Schweinefuses are strong pairing on the course

Siblings Logan and Jaden Schweinefus of Ossian have had a strong finish to the spring golf season, one that will result in an addition to the family trophy case. Together, the duo teamed up to bring home a trophy for first place at the Iowa High School Athletic Association Co-ed Golf Tournament. The win comes just weeks after senior Logan was crowned the boys’ Class 2A state champion and sophomore Jaden finished 10th at the Girls’ State Golf Tournament, also helping her team finish fourth in the team standings.  (Zakary Kriener photo)

For the Schweinefus family of Ossian, it would be safe to say that the sport of golf is a passionate hobby that is shared by all five members.

“Since we were about 3 or 4 years old, we had a golf club in our hands,” shared Logan Schweinefus, a 2016 graduate of South Winneshiek. “Our parents have been big influences in our golfing careers. They are responsible for getting us started.”

'Every day is Father's Day'

For South Winneshiek baseball coach Alex Smith, every day is Father’s Day, especially when his three boys, (l-r) Bennett (4), Barrett (3), and Brandt (1), join him at the ball diamond. Along with his wife, Laura, and his parents, the Smith family are among the biggest supporters of the Warriors, attending virtually every game the team plays. (submitted photo)

Reiersons reflect on 25th anniversary of flood

Helen and Joe Reierson recently reflected on the 25th anniversary of the June 14-15, 1991, flood that displaced them from their home on Center Street in Elgin. It wasn’t the first flood the couple experienced, but they expected it to be the last after moving to a different home on Franklin Street in Elgin. Above, the couple look through a scrapbook of memories of that 500-year flood. (Janell Bradley photo)

Floodwaters can result in devastation that not only displaces families temporarily, but for a handful of couples in Elgin, the flood of 1991 left their homes unlivable.

This month, which marks the 25th anniversary of the June 14-15, 1991, flood, Joe and Helen Reierson reflected on how quickly Otter Creek left its banks as the Turkey River was unable to handle the deluge of a 10-inch rainfall upstream from Elgin.

While it wasn’t the first flood the Reiersons had experienced, it was a “flood of all floods,” and meant they had to find a new home.
