The West Union Recreation Complex has been a shining example of what hardworking, dedicated volunteers can achieve.

For 17 years, the complex has exhibited some of the beauty West Union has to offer. Couple that with the innovative Downtown Streetscape Project, and West Union may just be the envy of every small town in Iowa.

Allamakee-Clayton Electric Co-op has begun an effort to add Internet broadband service in rural communities not being served by other telecommunications providers. The Connect America fund, administered by the Federal Communications Commission, awarded $1.45 million to REC last August for a hybrid fiber/fixed wireless network.

Paul Foxwell, REC general manager and executive vice president, said, “We’ve found there is a lot of interest in getting better broadband service. It’s like when rural electrification was sweeping the country. Having electricity was seen as a luxury then by a lot of people, but now it’s a necessity.”
