'Wow, this is amazing'

One of the most significant changes that has been made for the South Winneshiek Athletic Department is the updating of the football field and a new track. The project, completed in 2013, featured an overhaul of the football playing surface, an all-weather track, and other aesthetic updates. (Zakary Kriener photo)

The culmination of over five years of planning, hard work, and anticipation have resulted in a major overhaul of the South Winneshiek athletic facility in Calmar.

The project was kicked off in the summer of 2010 when the first step was taken to revamp the Warrior facilities, beginning with the weight room.

Since then, the softball complex, football field, track, baseball press box and bleachers, and the bus barn have all been updated, making one of the finest athletic complexes in the state of Iowa.

Sister Julia Walsh, an alumna of Valley High School, recently made her final profession of vows, becoming a Catholic sister with the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in La Crosse, Wis. Walsh’s milestone marked the culmination of over nine years of hard work and dedication, which began shortly after graduating from Loras College. She is shown here with Archdiocese of Dubuque Bishop Michael Jackels. (submitted photo)

In 1965, there were a total of nearly 180,000 Catholic sisters in the United States, spread out across over 17,500 parishes. In 2014, there were just under 50,000 sisters among virtually the same number of parishes. The statistics don’t lie – the choice for many to take the vow of Catholic sisterhood is not nearly as popular of a decision as it was decades ago. But that is not something that Elgin’s own Julia Walsh let stand in her way.

Valley rec center closer to reality

Last week this field was nothing but a sea of grass. Now, Lowell Lyngaas stands at the south end looking at the layout of the new rec center/ team practice facility near Elgin. The little flags not only outline the shape of the building, but also mark the spots where the rafters will be put in place to support the hi-tech fabric shell. (Jerry Wadian photo)

A long time ago Lowell Lyngaas had a dream of a rec center in the Valley area.

It’s taken over a decade, but thanks to lots of fundraising, especially by the Race America board, and advances in technology, the dream is close to reality.

Senior Night sees WC earn the win

On senior night, all three of West Central’s seniors stepped up in a big way to lead the Blue Devils to victory, 3-0, over MFL-Mar Mac. Ashley Buznyski got the Blue Devil offense in motion with this serve receive along the boundary.

Senior Night sees WC earn the win

On an emotional Senior Night, the West Central Blue Devils used those emotions to sweep the MFL-MarMac Bulldogs out of the gym in a volleyball match on Thursday, Oct. 8.

Each game started the same way, a point for the Blue Devils (4-19). This is fundamentally different from how the team has started in the past. Usually, West Central gets off to a slow start and meanders towards hoping to win. On this night, the team’s attitude and confidence was clearly different.

Bank 1st to inform county on cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is vital in today’s digital age. A person’s identity can be at risk if he or she isn’t careful. We see in the news all too often a major corporation's customers’ personal data compromised by a skilled group of hackers.

The 1995 film “Hacker,” which stars a young Angelina Jolie, depicts hacking almost like a video game. That isn’t the case. People can easily compromise their personal data by logging into what they think is a legitimate website, but it turns out to be a dupe. Even mobile phones are at risk as we hear reports of phones being hacked and explicit pictures being released without the owners consent. We can’t turn on the TV without seeing Hillary Clinton’s name in the news over her use of her personal email to deal with what could have been classifed information, leaving the account potentially open to any individual with the ability to steal from it.

Hackers aren’t the only threat to be aware of. We all get those emails: I’m an African prince; I have $100,000,000 I need to hide from an army overthrowing my family. Give me your checking account number, and I’ll deposit the money in your account to keep it safe. Seems way, way too good to be true, and it is, but thousands of Americans have had their bank accounts wiped out because they took the email seriously.

These and other online issues are why Bank 1st in West Union has decided to become a champion of cybersecurity during October, which is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
