As the sun began to set over the Calmar sky, a slight mist began to fall and the ingredients seemed just right for a smash-mouth football game. That is exactly what the Homecoming crowd got as the Warriors held on to defeat the New Hampton Chickasaws, 8-6.

The Chickasaws seemed to move the ball at will on the Warriors on the opening drive of the ball game. But the South Winn defense came up big, as it would all night, to force New Hampton to turn the ball over on downs.

The Ossian City Council will see a significant makeover come fall with four seats up for grabs in the Nov. 3 election, including the position of mayor that will be vacated by Charles Covell.

Along with the mayoral position, three council seats will be up for grabs. The terms previously held by Tom Bushman, Dan Langreck, and Earl (Scott) Meyer are expiring.

At the filing deadline of 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, there were only two candidates who filed the necessary paperwork to run for a position as a city official.

Dan Langreck filed to run for re-election on the council, while Ossian resident Troy Troge will also have his name on the ballot for one of the three available positions.

Giving back to the community

Boy Scout Logan West spruced up Lincoln Park in Clermont as his Eagle Scout project. He replaced the old cement benches, pulled up all the old shrubs, and painted the wrought-iron fence. He started the project on July 2, 2014, and finished on Sept. 9, 2014. He will become an Eagle Scout in Court of Honor ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, at the West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont.

Boy Scout Logan West spruced up Lincoln Park in Clermont for his Eagle Scout project.

While searching for an idea, West visited with Legion members in Clermont, who suggested he redo the memorial stones dedicated to each service branch at the park. He was told it was going to be a $10,000 endeavor, but West didn’t feel he could raise that much money, nor did he think it would take the 100 hours’ minimum required for an Eagle Scout project.

However, that gave him the idea he was searching for. As his project, West decided to replace some of the benches, paint the wrought-iron fence and fix up the landscaping by the Lincoln statue in the park.
