Quite a road to travel, from North Fayette to Harvard

Second session group for Harvard Debate Council's workshop for public speaking and argumentation, July 2015.

Students speak to groups as small as two up to 30 or more at a time throughout the Harvard campus. Instructor Deano Pape says his favorite moment is when the public asks the students questions after their speeches. (Courtesy photos.)

Despite growing up in northeast Iowa, the two Ossian Senior Hospice residents cannot be considered lifetime residents of the small town. Both went their own ways, Ernst to South Dakota and Oyloe to Arizona, for multiple decades. However, and quite coincidentally, the two just could not stay away from their hometown, as they wound up back in the town in which they grew up.

When Matthew Kane (Smith) takes the stage at the Fayette County Fair, it will be a sort of family reunion for the country singer.

Kane has been performing on stage since the age of 5 when he was a part of his parents, Charlie and Gwen Smith’s band The Amarrilla Band. His father was a bass player for Waylon Jennings. Kane was raised on Jennings along with other artists such as Hank Williams Jr., Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and ZZ Top.

“I was kind of born into it. I knew when I got older, about the time I was 21, that that is what I was supposed to be doing,” the musician said.
