Despite being short some of the team’s best swimmers, the West Union Swim team rallied to defeat Calmar on Thursday, June 18, after easily defeating Monona/Postville on June 16.

Monona/Postville was no match for W.U., losing 471-168. The dominance started with the relays, which won every event but two, and in both of those each team was disqualified.

The score continued to add up in West Union’s favor during individual competition as number of swimmers rose to the occasion in just their second meet of the season.

Monona/Postville wasn’t much competition for West Union, but W.U.’s June 18 meet against Calmar was a much different story.

A difficult journey brings precious rewards

Like many other couples they knew, Spencer and Heidi Goettsch wanted more than anything to have a family. Yet they struggled to conceive, and after several rounds of intrauterine insemination, chose to attempt in-vitro fertilization.

The in-vitro procedure was successful and the young couple, married since 2008, learned they were expecting a baby boy in March 2013.

Through the months of struggle and expense to achieve a successful pregnancy, Spencer admits all his hopes centered on the birth of a healthy baby.  "Through this whole process, I just wanted everyone to be healthy," he remembers, also expressing concern for his petite wife.

But on the afternoon of March 2, 2013, as Spencer used a video camera in the Mercy Medical Center delivery room to capture the moment their son entered the world – everything suddenly went awry.
