'Rapunzel' to let down hair at DeSales

'Rapunzel' to let down hair at DeSales

 

 

It’s out of the tower and on the run as a zany cast of friends and foes help in Rapunzel’s harrowing escape from the towering imprisonment of Madame Gothel.

Add a dash of French flair and a pinch of personal triumph and friendship, and you have a story you won’t soon forget.

Missoula Children’s Theatre came to town this week to present an original musical adaptation of “Rapunzel” with the cooperation of over 50 DeSales students.

Performances are set for 7 p.m. on Friday, April 17 and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, in the South Winneshiek High School auditorium.

Walking through the aisles of their Elgin grocery store, Tim and Colletta Harnisch point out a couple of the displays that have been moved or newly created.

“We hope to improve the overall shopping experience of our customers,” stressed Tim, who with his wife recently opened the doors to TiCo (Tim and Colletta) Market in the downtown Fayette County community.

Tim noted that the store shelves continue to transition to the Shurfine-related brand of products. In addition to a propane tank exchange, the inventory will continue to include a large variety of fresh meat and produce, DVD rentals, and a wide greeting card selection.

West Central senior Erin Lehs struck gold Friday in Postville as she won the 200 dash in a time of 30.10.

As a team, the Blue Devils finished fourth in the meet that was postponed after Tuesday’s rain hit the area.

Other medalists for the Devils included a silver by the 4x200. Braidyn Buhrow and Lauren Fink won bronze in the long jump and 800, respectively.

The West Central boys’ track team keeps improving. While the Devils finished ninth Friday in Postville, head coach John Greco said, “I’m happy overall because we were able to shave time and distances off a lot of events. Our whole objective is to keep improving every week.”

James Niemann won the only medals for WC, capturing a silver in the 110 hurdles and a bronze in the 400 hurdles. The shuttle hurdle came close to a medal finishing fourth.

McSweeny-Schickel to wed June 6

 

 

Lucas McSweeny and Sarah Schickel, both of Sergeant Bluff, wish to announce their engagement. 

Parents of the couple are Rob and Pat McSweeny of Maynard and Bill and Candi Schickel of Mason City. 

Lucas graduated from the University of Dubuque in 2010 and is employed as a corporate pilot at Tyson Foods in Sioux City.

Sarah graduated from Wartburg College in 2013 and is employed as a graphic designer at Western Iowa Tech Community College, also in Sioux City. 

The wedding will take place June 6 in Sioux City.

New Maynard library closer to reality

     Fundraising is ongoing and plans continue to take shape for the new Maynard Community Library, which will be located east of the post office and should double the size of the current library. Estimated cost of the new structure is $675,000, and thanks to several memorials and generous donations, the library building fund currently stands at $350,000.    “We recently received a $45,000 donation from the Stanley and Phyllis Donat Memorial. In addition, we have been raising funds through our Dessert Gala, concession stands, Schwan’s registry sales, bake sales, Christmas wreath sales, and flower pen sales,” said library director Lezlie Barry.

Russell Wayne Wenger, 90, of Elkader, Iowa formerly of Elgin, Iowa died Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, Iowa.

Russell was born July 22, 1924 to Charles and Marjorie (Cook) Wenger in Elgin, Iowa and was baptized at Elgin Methodist Church on September 9, 1934. 

He graduated from Elgin High School. 

In 1943, Russell enlisted in the Navy where he served his country honorably until 1946.

Russell was united in marriage to Avis Mork on December 29, 1951 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa. To this union, three children were born, Steven, Craig and Paul.

Russell worked construction and owned/operated the Wenger Tavern. He was a rural mail carrier for 35 years.

Betty Lou Tillman, age 84, of Waucoma, IA died Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Linn Haven Rehab & Healthcare in New Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma with Rev. Nick March celebrating the Mass. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Friends greeted the family 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 13, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Waucoma where there was a 3:00 p.m. rosary and a 7:00 p.m. scripture service. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.

Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Waucoma was in charge of arrangements.

Edna Corrine Blockhus passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Palmer Lutheran Heath Center in West Union.

She was born on June 16, 1931 in Elgin, Iowa to Louie and Ellen (Kupan) Nelson.

She graduated from Elgin High School in 1948.

Edna was united in marriage to Richard Blockhus on October 10, 1950 in Clermont, Iowa. Two children were born to this union.

She worked for many years at Garvin’s in West Union.

Edna loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed many camping and fishing trips with her family.

She was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Union.

Edna is survived by her son, Steve of Marion and three grandchildren, Josh Keith Baumler, Cody Neil Baumler, and Dillion Richard Baumler.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Lisa Baumler; a brother, Lyle; and sister, Lillian.

Francis Wurzer

Francis Wurzer

 

 

Francis Wurzer, age 91, of St. Lucas, IA, died Thursday, April 9, 2015, at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, IA.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by the Rev. Nick March on Monday, April 13, at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

Casket bearers were Francis’ grandsons; his granddaughters served as honorary casket bearers.

Arrangements were handled by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel, in Fort Atkinson.

Francis John Wurzer was born on May 23, 1923, the son of Konrad and Barbara (Kuennen) Wurzer on the Wurzer family farm near St. Lucas, IA. 

Francis attended St. Luke’s Catholic School and helped on the family farm.
