Tribute to Grannis set to S.H.I.N.E.

In the fall of 1861 on the campus of Upper Iowa University in Fayette, a young man named Henry James Grannis was chosen unanimously to be Sergeant Color-Bearer for Company C, the 12th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He proudly fulfilled his duty in 27 battles and skirmishes, holding the impressive position of being the only flag-bearer, Union or Confederate, to persevere the entirety of the Civil War without injury.

The U.I.U. Collegian wrote at his death, “No son of Upper Iowa was ever more deserving of the laurel wreath of veneration than this noble, heroic soul. The story of his life must long be an inspiration toward the highest virtues of manhood, courage, patriotism, sterling integrity, the highest and truest citizenship.”

In this 150th anniversary of the conclusion of the Civil War, the local homeschoolers called S.H.I.N.E. (Students Homeschooled in Iowa’s NorthEast) are paying tribute to Henry Grannis in their spring musical entitled “Under the Banner.”

Forty-five students, under the direction of Aaron and Karla Bicknese, will share a collection of favorite Civil War era songs and tell the story of a modern boy who is studying Civil War history and meets the real Henry Grannis while attending a Civil War re-enactment in Clermont.

Performances will be Saturday, May 2, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Fayette Opera House in Fayette.

The performance is free, and the public is welcome to attend.

Beginning a new chapter

Beginning a new chapter

by Mike Van Sickle

I have experienced writer’s block in the past, but this is the first time it is because I have so much to say and don’t know where to start.

After nearly 20 years in the newspaper industry, I have accepted a new career opportunity in Editorial Services at Upper Iowa University. So this will be the last article I will be writing as editor of The Union and as regional manager of the Elgin Echo, Fayette Leader, and Ossian Bee.

Over the years my role as news, feature, and sports writer has provided me the opportunity to personally meet a countless number of people, many of whom I owe an extreme amount of gratitude. I guess I’ll start at the beginning.

I am indebted to fellow Hawkeye native Janell Bradley, then owner/publisher of the Elgin Echo, who first took a chance on me as an unproven writer.

County ditches not to be used as dumping grounds

Fayette County Roadsides Manager Blake Gamm shows one of 47 tires found in a ditch near Wadena that he believes were dumped by a tire repair shop, because all were hand-marked with size and indicators of where repair was needed. Gamm wants to see the incidence of dumping garbage and tires in the county's roadsides, reduced. (Janell Bradley photo)

They say one man's garbage is another man's treasure, but for Fayette County Roadsides manager Blake Gamm, the junk being found in the county's ditches is all garbage that keeps his department from enhancing and beautifying the countryside.

Fayette County Conservation recently took a report of an entire load of tires cluttering a ditch north of Wadena. It took three people two hours to load the 47 tires into two pickups and then haul them to the county transfer station for proper disposal.
