     Margaret “Peg” Krambeer, age 75, of Decorah, IA, died on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah, IA.

 

     Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 16, 2015, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Stacey Nalean-Carlson presiding.

 

     Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah.

Cabin Fever 2015

 

 

South Winneshiek PTO is sponsoring the 15th Annual Cabin Fever family event from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at South Winneshiek Elementary/Middle School in Ossian.

Activities for toddlers through middle school students are open to all area families.

Children will have a chance to play in the Chip Shoppe AirWave Fun Center, enjoy face painting and tattoos, participate in the book/cookie walk, and many other hands-on activities. Families will also be able to listen to a DJ while participating in the activities with many chances to win prizes.

Pizza, popcorn, and 1919 Root Beer will be available throughout the day.

Freewill donations will be accepted at the door; proceeds will be used to help defray the costs for prizes and the day’s activities.

South Winn First LEGO League team goes to state

 

The South Winneshiek First LEGO League team participated in the State LEGO League competition on the Iowa State University campus Saturday, bringing home a first-place trophy for “Innovation” and an 11th-place finish in the “Robotics” category. The competition, which featured 72 teams from across the state, required teamwork and cooperation from each team. South Winneshiek’s “Warrior Robotics” team, surrounding the ISU Cy mascot, includes (clockwise from left) Ethan Luzum, Jacob Carnesi, Carter Meyer, Henry Castro, and Hannah Franzen. “If you’ve seen one horseshoe, you’ve seen them all.”

Tell that to Katie Gove and other Clermont Historical Society members over the coming weeks and you may get a firm stare, followed by a brief educational lecture on the subject.

Gove and a small band of volunteers expect to meticulously examine, clean, and record hundreds of horseshoes, metalworking tools, and other related items over a three-week period in an effort to complete the ongoing Burkard Riegel Blacksmith Shop project in Clermont.

New coordinator excited about VCC possibilities

 

Ready to take on the responsibilities of her new position as Valley Community Coalition coordinator at VCC’s Clermont office is Stacie Schroeder. Schroeder, who previously served as half-time Mentoring coordinator for VCC, is looking forward to helping the organization expand its influence throughout the North Fayette Valley community.

Accepting the position of full-time coordinator for Valley Community Coalition is not something that Stacie Schroeder is taking lightly. As she prepares to assume the duties of her new position on Feb. 1, she is aware that she will face many challenges. She is also excited about the prospect of taking the organization to another level, as well as the potential benefits for area youth and the communities in which they live.

West Central girls’ basketball lost all three games last week as the Devils faced a trio of high-quality opponents.

Tuesday, Jan. 13,  at home they lost to MFL/MM, 59-24. Friday and Saturday, the girls were on the road, losing to 11th-ranked Turkey Valley, 64-22, on Friday and to Don Bosco, 47-30, Saturday in Ames.

There were no stats available for either of the two road games at press time.

The West Central boys added two more victories last week, running their record to 10-1 on the season.

Tuesday, the boys beat MFL/MM, 70-65, in Maynard. It was close all the way among two of the top teams in the UIC.

Dorothy Brickman, 89, of Oelwein passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015 at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein.

Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein with Rev. Leo Combs-Lay officiating.   Visitation was helf from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein and for one-hour before the services on Saturday at the church.

Zenita B. Arthur, 98, of Fayette and formerly of Randalia and Westgate, died Thursday, Jan. 15, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at Union United Methodist Church of rural Sumner with Pastor Johnny Ray Tucker officiating.  Interment followed at the church cemetery.  Friends were invited to call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one-hour preceding services at the church on Monday.

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner assisted the family with the arrangements.

Memorials may be given in her name to Union United Methodist Church or the Westgate Public Library. Online condolences may be left at www.beckermilnesrettig.com.

Elgin farmer named ICA president-elect

A fifth-generation farmer from Elgin has been named president-elect of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. Mike Cline was named to the leadership position during the organization’s recent board of directors’ meeting held at the Iowa Cattle Industry Convention.

Cline operates a crop and cow-calf operation in rural Elgin with his wife, Linda. An active member of the Iowa Beef Industry Council, he has served in all officer positions of the organization.
