For Dennis Blumhagen, farming has been a way of life from the day he was born. His farming background and family-oriented lifestyle inspired him to dedicate 12 years to the South Winneshiek High School ag program and FFA chapter.

The former teacher and advisor was born and raised on his family’s farm near Castalia. He and his wife, Donna, have lived on the farm since he graduated from Iowa State University in 1969. Together, they have raised four children, Lisa, Brian, Dan, and David. They have welcomed four grandchildren into the family.

Blumhagen, who retired in 2010, first became involved with teaching agriculture classes and FFA at South Winneshiek in 1998. The opportunity to watch kids learn and grow throughout their four years of high school inspired the farmer to serve as a longtime FFA advisor.

Damage consisted of some holes that had been put into boards on the bandstand and a few light bulbs that had been broken. Two of the youth that had been contacted were present at Monday’s meeting, along with their parents and guardians, to explain what had occurred.

Upper Iowa lost its football game at top-ranked Minnesota State Saturday, 45-14, but set a number of individual career and team records.

The game started well for UIU as it led, 14-7, at the end of the first quarter. However, the Maverick offense rang up 17 points in the second quarter and 14 more in the third to win going away.

The big story of the day was the numerous records set by Peacock players.
