Kurt Anfinson, or “Norske” is well-known for baking and decorating some of the finest cakes in northeast Iowa, including his signature homemade angel food with raspberry filling.

The cake recipe is one that had been published in the Ossian Bee many years ago by Ethel Holthaus, and Norske figured it was worth a try.

“The only thing I changed is that the recipe called for salt, and I don’t add that,” noted the longtime baker.

This weekend Norske will also be a celebrity serving as grand marshal as attendees “Dance Through the Decades” at Ossian Fest 2014.

The Elgin City Council discussed the possibility of selling an ambulance it owns to a local group interested in obtaining the vehicle. Dan Bonjour was present at the Monday, July 21, meeting to express the interest of Rural Iowa Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) in the ambulance.

“We are a volunteer organization that provides communication services in situations where there is an emergency caused by some sort of disaster or major event. In those situations there can be a system overload, especially in small communities, and we can help provide the communication services that are needed,” explained Bonjour.

Life's a roller-coaster

So many times you hear the phrase “God never gives you more than you can handle,” and that may be true, but he sure does test individuals throughout life.

Those who know me know that July has been a month FULL of ups and downs.

For years we have lived four houses from my parents in Calmar. Mom and Dad never knew when one of my kids would just stop by to say hi or call for a ride to or from somewhere. It was usually Dad who jumped in the car.

When my girls spent every day all day at the pool before they could drive, it was Dad who would wait until the 3 p.m. break to take them popcorn, candy bars, or cookies, and a pop or water.

He always seemed to know what everyone needed and took care of them.

Humble Army Career Counselor of the Year runner-up

Serving in the United States Army is an honor and a privilege that allows individuals to train for professions beyond military service.

That is true for 1998 West Central graduate James Klink.

“I had graduated from high school early and couldn’t see myself going to college right away,” admitted the Army career counselor. “I was driving by the National Guard Armory in Waterloo one day and decided to go in. I checked it out, took the test, and the recruiter said that I could do any job I wanted, and I have been involved in the military ever since.”
