Saigon: scooter paradise

Saigon: scooter paradise

Some four centuries before Christ, along the Red River on the border of modern China, a culture known as the Viets founded what is known today as Vietnam.

Over time the Viets spread throughout Vietnam. Saigon, now called Ho Chi Minh City, became the chief city in the southern part of the country.

The French occupied Saigon for most of a century, making it their chief center of operations. America made it the focal point of our stay in the country during the war.

Vietnam: slow change in an ancient land

CUTLINE: These “stores” in Vietnam may seem unduly small and dirty, but they line Highway 1 from Saigon to Xuan Loc, 30 miles of little shops. They normally supply one kind of item and provide a living to the entrepreneurs running them. (Jerry Wadian photo)

…wed in California…

Megan Jane Carr and Michael John Standafer of Carlsbad, Calif., were married Saturday, May 18, in a ceremony held at the Naval Amphibious Base Chapel in Coronado, Calif. The 4 p.m. ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Charles Lacombe.

Parents of the couple are Melodie Frazer and John Carr, both of Manchester, N.H., Roberta and Allen Mittelsted of West Union, and John and Nancy Standafer of Cedar Falls.

The bride was given in marriage by her father. Wearing a white, lace-appliqued gown with a fitted bodice and flared skirt featuring a sculpted neckline and V-shaped back, she carried a bouquet of long-stemmed white roses accented with carnations and baby’s breath.
